Focal Length

The longer the focal length, the narrower the angle of view and the higher the magnification. The shorter the focal length, the wider the angle of view and the lower the magnification.

18mm:

This focal length shows the model as slightly distorted, as well as having the background in focus.

55mm:

The models face is less distorted, with the background becoming more blurred. This more represents what the eye sees.

100mm:

Models face looks better than the last focal lengths as it is not distorted at all. The background is also even more blurred. More separation created between the model and background.

300mm:

34mm

48mm

165mm

These are my results from the Where’s Your Head At task which encouraged me to experiment with my two camera lenses and aided my learning about focal lengths. For the first two I used my 18-55mm which would previously have been my first choice. I can see a difference in the sitter’s face, it is much clearer at 48mm than at the 34mm and there is also a sharper depth of field. However I also decided to experiment with my 55-300mm lens and I feel the image captured at 165mm is the strongest because the sitter is sharp against the dark leafy background and there is also a subtle catchlight in her eyes not noticeable in the other photos. 

Furthermore, as part of the Seeing The Light brief on my second and third photo shoots, I alternated between the two lenses instead of restricting myself. The first photo was taken at 55mm and although I really like the image, I was able to receive feedback from classmates and a lecturer about the potential to improve on it by experimenting with bokeh and a larger zoom lens. As a result, the second image was a retake and taken at 110mm, creating a more extensive depth of field.
