They are! Dearborn and Polk is near where I live. It cracks me up because people from Chicago are like “BAHAHAH THE STREETS!” and people who aren’t are like “Why is one of your cats named after a president?”

Well, everyone gets the zoomies at 3am at this con, but otherwise yes it is a very mellow event.

I honestly backread my tumblr quite a bit when the ask came in, looking for a post where I had expressed my opinion without being asked. It was remarkably difficult to find and I’m not sure if that’s a good thing or a bad one.

She had another name, once, as a freshman, but nobody remembered what it was. They only remember the mint on her breath and the mint on her lips and the peppermint oil she dabs on her temples when a headache comes on. She always carries a tube of handmade peppermint-beeswax lip balm and a tin of sweet mints and a tiny bottle of peppermint oil. As a senior, she does the same as all of the other sensible students, carrying iron and salt and leaving offerings of cream and trying her best not to offend anyone. As a freshman, she wasn’t so wise.

She vanished one day, warm and cheerful and fascinated and smelling of water lily and aloe.

She reappeared a few days later, cooler and quieter but just as fascinated, smelling of peppermint. She doesn’t talk about what had happened. Mint on her lips and mint on her breath and mint on her hands, cool and sharp and sweet and tinged with luck.

She reads all the lore she can get her hands on, learning all she can about where she had been taken and those who had taken her, because knowledge is power and mint is lucky and knowledge and luck make a person very dangerous indeed.

Well, the turnover at the shelter is pretty high (a good thing!) but it was evident that most of the adoptions happened on the weekend, and then the new cats came in on Tuesday or Wednesday. So Thursday or Friday, I’d get more or less my pick before the weekend came, and I really wanted it to be this weekend because I’d have that extra day on Monday (we get Monday off for Memorial Day) to bond with them before leaving for work. Thursday just worked out. 

I had a couple of cats I wanted to look at, and Dearborn was among them. I thought she didn’t have any littermates, so I wanted to adopt her and another cat that had no littermates, but it turns out she had a sister. And when I arrived they were both sleeping curled up together in their litterbox like GOOBERS. 

Dearborn was timid, which I had anticipated from her photos, but Polk was very playful and got Dearborn to play as well, and they seemed like such a good pair I knew they’d be fun. 

The process you go through is you meet the cats, you make your choice, and they take the cards off the cats’ display cage but leave them in the cage while you fill out the paperwork. Then they process the paperwork while you shop for anything you might need (they give you coupons for free food and the like). After you’re done shopping and they’re done with the paperwork, you come back and they bring out a carrier, take the cats out of the display cage, and put them in the carrier for you, and off you go.

So I’ve got this backpack full of cat food and we get to the display cages and there’s this woman there like “Oh good, an attendant! I want THIS ONE” and points to either Dearborn or Polk, I think Dearborn. 

And the attendant gave her a bit of sass because like, there is a process and a screening, and also that cat is spoken for. So then the lady turns to me and is like YOU TOOK MY CAT, and not in a funny way exactly, in that kind of “Haha this is a joke but I might follow you home and murder you for this cat” kind of a way. 

Fortunately the shelter folks distracted her while I ducked out with my cat carrier, but all the way home I was looking over my shoulder.

It does, it actually dead-ends into Polk at the old train station :D

You can’t see it from that angle, but there is a little catnip mouse that dangles down on an elastic cord! Given how much they like the mouse I suspect it is not long for this world.

If you want to entertain them without taking up floor space catastrophic creations has amazing wall shelving that could turn Murder wall into Kitten Murder wall in a very entertaining way. I got my cat 6 shelves to go up to the top of my built ins and she loves it! And you can DIY some of it.

Yeah, it’s a lot. It is a horror AU -- there’s a lot you can remove from HP Lovecraft’s fiction without losing the essential horror factor, but you can’t take out everything. I warn with an abundance of caution, so the instances of those are scattered throughout and not like, constantly jammed in there. But I figure nobody wants to run nose-first into stuff that’s going to set them off, even if it’s just one instance in a much larger story. And of course when it’s up on AO3 I’ll add in details as an end-note, so people can look it over without everyone else being spoiled.
