idk i just wanted to point out that its not necessarily girlfriend? the hangul is 동백씨 애인 있어요? = dongbaekssi aein issoyo? and like, i know aein isnt exactly girlfriend. it can be, korean naver papago by default translated it to girlfriend. however, if you scroll down to 애인 you see theres lover, which is closer to a "pure" definition of it. followed by (남자) boyfriend, (여자) girlfriend. namja is man, yeoja is woman. if it specifically mentions BoyFriend or GirlFriend, it would be 남친=namchin or 여친=yochin. if it specifically mentions A BoyFriend or A GirlFriend, it would be 남자 친구=namja chingu or 여자 친구=yoja chingu. but this and the character just says 애인=lover.

but then if you ask daum dictionary, also a korean app, you get "Do you have a boyfriend?" (funnily enough no name in the translation even tho its Right There).

Actually. I think the yt clip is right. Or rather, as close to right it can be. My limited Korean can hear him say "gisaeng (기생)", which is an entertainer of sorts. A profession where a person was expected to dance and sing and, entertain. It translates to parasitism though, like the movie parasite.

Now.

If I am correct in what I hear, I'm gonna guess it's like slang to him, being a 19 year old from 2021. To say someone is 'as pretty as a gisaeng'. Why would he say "that oily character", that doesn't make sense to me. No hate to the ppl who translated this though, none whatsoever! I'm just confused as to just how different the exact same scene was translated lol.

Now. Again, limited Korean and not being able to find a transcript of what he's saying in Korean (yt auto translate was of no help), my guess is something along the lines of:

'That gisaeng looking fella in the room is the crown prince?' I.e, "You mean that pretty boy in that room is a real prince?"

After this, Geum says something along the lines of 'watch what you say!'. As in, 'don't call the crown prince a gisaeng!' As in, a gisaeng being of lower status during this time period.

But hey, this is just me and my limited Korean making speculations and theories. Do not take my word for it. This whole theory rides on him *actually* saying gisaeng lmao.

Anyway it's bothering me and I've listened to this scene over and over again and I can't get over this rn so I'm just gonna leave it for a day or two until it doesn't bother me as much lol.
