This was a somewhat odd area of Lalotai - most of the monsters seemed to get along a lot better here, or at least just left each other alone more often. Travelling through, you found they had all agreed on one rule, which wasn't particularly well-explained to you by the monster you heard it from.
"Be nice to the whale and don't cause trouble, do that and you should be fine."
You certainly hadn't come across whatever whale they were referring to yet, but the rule definitely had you curious about it.
Soon, you found yourself passing through what appeared to be a fairly popular nesting spot, and you could hear a haunting voice singing what sounded like a lullaby nearby.
... I'm going to have a number of monster ocs to rival @tealtambourine's at this rate.
Meet Whaea! This old land-whale is the guardian and caretaker of a large nesting ground used by all different kinds of monsters. She keeps everything in order, fights off intruders who pose a danger to mating monsters and/or their young, and takes care of little ones who get lost or are abandoned for some reason. Because of this she has a large number of adoptive children, all of different species, from crabs to spiders to slugs to bats and many, many more. She is a kind and caring monster who never found a mate or had children of her own but is perfectly content with her ever-growing little misfit family. (She considers herself a bit old to have much of a chance at finding a mate now, though she certainly wouldn't mind one if she happened to be lucky enough to meet the right monster.) She cannot see or hear very well at all, but luckily her kids help her with those problems and she has continued on with her job and life as usual rather well. She has a beautiful, somewhat haunting singing voice.
On her back is the least mobile of her many kids, a colorful little crab named Kanonui. He, like most coral hermit crabs, prefers to stay in one place if he can, and his place is a little hiding spot he built on Whaea's back. He is always with her, and if for some reason you find him wandering around on his own Whaea can't be too far behind. He's very shy, and is often afraid of unfamiliar monsters. It takes some time for him to really warm up to someone, and even then he's still rather shy.

Rangahau on Regan Balzer*an aqaintance i had met while working at the Kura. Now living in Hamilton I must make an effort to meet her in person again. I had recently interviewed her. We share similarities in both our art practices. I was honoured and humbled to have gotten an interview with this beautiful lady. I hope to bump into her very soon.

*A small crab bumps into Whaea's side. It seems they've been spattered with some of tar or ink, as they're rubbing vehemently at their eyes and cannot see where they are going.* "Oof."
Whaea paused, feeling the small thing bump into her, and squinted down to try to get a look at it. From her back, a pair of eyestalks and feather-like antennae poked out of a small, crusty structure to look as well.
“It’s another crab, Mama.” the colorful little coral crab said. “It looks like a squid or an octopus got it or somethin’, it’s all inky.”
“Oh dear.” Whaea chuckled gently. “Well, little one, there’s a pool in my cave, let’s get you cleaned up.”
at primary we had this teacher she just went by whaea (which means aunty in te reo) and it was raining one time and she was wearing sandals so she she stuffed her sandal with toilet paper to keep her feet dry
