This event is the brainchild of longtime Charlotte-based Caribbean radio personalities Bill Blass of WPEG Power 98FM and Vinroy Reid of WGIV 103.3FM. Blass said they created the event because Charlotte's Caribbean nightlife scene was not catering to the reggae music lovers who yearned to dance to old school reggae from the 60's through the 90's.

"At 'I Remember When' you will hear Rocksteady classics, Reggae favorites, the best old school Dancehall joints, and top Raggamuffin hits," said Blass. The weekly old school reggae event just started in Mid-October of this year.

True, it is in the beginning stages of establishing its footing in the Charlotte nightlife scene. However, as word-of-mouth about the event travels, the old-school-reggae-heads are finding their way to Mama's Caribbean on Saturday night. The party starts at 10pm and does not end until 2am.

This late-hour nightlife fun gives patrons an authentically Jamaican dancehall experience. The decor at Mama's Caribbean automatically puts patrons in the islander state of mind. Mountainous beach murals decorate the walls. An arts & crafts palm tree brings island flava to the space's performance area. The small stage at the front of the restaurant has a large window behind it that cast the Plaza Midwood cityscape as its back drop. Strollers-by can take a peek into Mama's Caribbean to catch a glimpse of the authentic Jamaican culture that resides at 1504 Central Ave.

Onlookers are always welcomed to come in and get the full Mama's Caribbean experience. Every Saturday afternoon from 4-6pm Vinroy Reid, better known as Mr. Yes Yes Yes, invites the community over to Mama's Caribbean to partake in the live broadcast of his WGIV 103.3FM radio show "The Caribbean Connection". In his heavy Jamaican accent he explains, "Radio is fe de people. And I love to have de people come in and connect wit us ere at Mama's." He continues, "Dat is why we are taking tings a step furder wit 'I Remember When'. Because we want people to come in and have a true Jamaican experience tru de taste of de food, sound of de riddims,and da movin' of der bodies."
