The next stop for us in Wellington was a stadium tour of WestPac Stadium. This was the largest structure I have ever seen that incorporated Maori traditions and customs into the architecture of their stadium. When we first walked up to the stadium, we saw a pretty cool and intricate design on the gates. I’m going to be honest: I did not think anything of the design at first, but after speaking with our tour guide, I realized that each design feature had a detailed and beautiful meaning. 

Here’s an example of what I mean. Above is the main gates of the stadium, where you see three feathers in a row. What I did not know is that each of these feathers represent something different, based on Maori traditions. 

The first feather on the left represents spirituality. Everyone has a spirituality, and it is unique and personable to that person. There is no right way for your spirit to be, but the most important thing is that you have your spirit. If you do not have spirit, you will get nowhere in life. 

The second feather in the middle represents high self-esteem. It is always important to carry yourself with pride and strength, because sometimes it is easy for the world to tear you down. 

The third feather, on the right, represents goodwill toward others. We are all here in the same life, so it is important for us to unite for the greater good and continue to strive for greatness and wellbeing. 

See?! When I saw these feathers, I thought they were for decoration. But they mean so much more than that for the people of New Zealand, especially the Maori. 

When we entered the stadium, we got a feel for its personality and the meaning of this place for the people of Wellington. It was absolutely stunning. It was not the nicest stadium I had ever visited, but it definitely had the most personality.
