Monster AU where Abbot was turned into a wendigo while on deployment.
Not willingly, of course, but Jack will still argue that he should have fought harder when they force-fed him the desecrated bodies of his friends.
Jack Abbot will also argue that he kept the secret of his being quite well. And indeed, he managed quite well for many years, as the only visual difference between a fed wendigo and a regular human is sharper teeth and paler skin.
Until he missed his feed.
Abbot had been using the morgue as his ‘hunting ground’, taking organs deemed unusable from organ donors and snagging small bits from bodies destined for the crematorium. Parts that are easy to look over, parts that go unnoticed.
He’d timed it in his shifts, finding the points where he wouldn’t be missed to slip away to get his meal.
But this last shift was horrific, understaffed and overcrowded, and Abbot couldn’t find the time to slip away until Robby was already in front of him for handover.
The last handover before Abbot’s week off. A week he’ll have to manage hungry, since there’s now no chance of him scoring the meal he so desperately needs.
Abbot walks home with dread wrapped around his shoulders like a clingy shawl.
He doesn’t show up for his next shift.
Robby had been worried for days now. Jack had been growing quieter over the week, until he stopped texting or calling at all two days ago. And now he doesn’t show up for his shift?
Robby can only hope that Jack’s still okay when Robby shows up at his door.
Robby knocks on Jack’s apartment door, and gets no answer. He calls for Jack, and gets no answer. He tries the door handle, and it’s locked.
Robby digs his key out of his bag, and opens the door.
He was expecting to maybe find Jack passed out on the couch, or in bed, or not there at all. At best, a Jack who’s just been caught up in something, or ignoring his calls. At the very worst, maybe a Jack that won’t wake again.
Robby was not expecting to find a wendigo. A wendigo with Jacks’s face. A wendigo that only stares at him and whines, curled on the bathroom floor in the dark.
Somehow, this is worse.
