I think about Wemberly Worried every day. I have always related to that mouse.
okay so it’s about time i talk about one of the oldest AUs i have because it’s a melverse au that’s really cool and it’s a shame i dont do more with it.
Modern Monster is the name of the AU and also the name of a magazine within the AU, which is the magazine that Wemberly, who is one of the main protagonists, works as a journalist for. the general gist of the plot is as follows:
unlike canon melverse, monsters are fully integrated into human society in this world and the spaces around them are more equipped for their needs. your species is now listed on your ID alongside other important information, among other changes.
of course, things aren’t perfect. humans and monsters have come a long way but there’s still some imbalance between who’s needs are met. the solutions in place for werewolves who turn uncontrollably are uncomfortable at best, and while blood drives for vampire blood banks are common, much less common are organ donors for the purpose of feeding ghouls. as the definition of “monster” becomes even broader, even less has been done to remedy the needs of those of much more obscure species, like aliens, giants, and imaginary folk.
enter Finnigan Ford, a revolutionary politician of his time. surprisingly few monsters have yet to break into politics around the world, so it’s even more remarkable that Governor Ford has managed not only this breakthrough, but also a positive reputation among both humans and monsters. truly, he could be the force of change the world direly needs… if not for the fact his ultimate goal is to bring about the apocalypse
Finn’s true name is Famine, and along side his brothers Duke (Death), Warren (War), and Percy (Pestilence), he was tasked by his father Aiwen to end the world in any way he can do that the earth may start anew. his political success is partially owed to the ease in which he can make rival politicians dissapear. eating someone leaves not much evidence, after all, and with the help of Duke (who happens to be the state coroner) it seems unlikely anyone could stop him
enter Wemberly, as she’s known to her friends. a journalist for Modern Monster magazine. in her dedicated efforts to secure an interview with the most talked about monster in the state, she uncovers some less inspiring things he’s done. it ends up falling on her. does she put her own life on the line and bring forward the crimes he’s committed, or does she play it safe and watch him rise to power through ill-gotten gains?
all the melverse characters you know exist within this AU with much different lives. barnabus is a wildly successful attourney still learning to cope in the modern world, the muse is a widely renowned but terribly lonely rock star, the seven deadly sins are all permanently locked away in isolation on each continent, zanzibar is a heavy weight monster wrestler pushing the boundaries of what’s fair, and so on and so forth.
so if any girl on earth should get to make a call about this, it should be me, and as i see it, you’re a DICK
ROUND 1 SIDE A: WORRYWARTS
LEFT: Tutter from Bear in the Big Blue House Description: "Blue mouse that lives with Bear in the Big Blue House." Tutter knows a lot about cheese and enjoys eating it, talking about it and reading about it. He likes to do things perfectly and gets upset sometimes when they don't seem to be working out.
RIGHT: Wemberly from Wemberly Worried Description: Wemberly’s parents think that she worries too much. She has a whole list of worries. What will school be like? Will she make friends? Will people laugh at her doll, Petal?

excerpt of a really really huge important moment in Modern Monster below the cut, involving an intense conversation between Famine and Wemberly
“Do I get a phone call? A will?”
“A will?” Famine asked with an incredulous scoff, “Do the cannibals you know let their victims write a will?”
“We’re sitting here talking, aren’t we?” Wemberly pointed out, “Something has to make you different. Right?”
She carefully watched every slightest shift in Famine’s expression. A lot was on the line, here. Not only her life, but a lot more, too. Countless people could end up like her. It needed to end here.
“You’re not the type of person I usually dine on, to be perfectly honest,” Famine explained, “I guess I’m… still rationalizing all this. Has to be done, of course. You seem to understand that.”
He drummed his fingers against the hardwood table between them, his eyes still looking her up and down. Wemberly wasn’t sure if the fidgeting was from impatience or anxiety. She wasn’t afforded the same luxury, not with her hands tied around the back of the chair.
“If I promised not to tell anyone, would you trust me? I’ve kept this all a secret this long, haven’t I?” She asked.
Famine shook his head, but didn’t make eye contact.
“Too dangerous,” He argued, “You could spill. You’d end up back here anyhow, just with a lot more rumors for my PR folks to mop up.”
“I guess that’s true. But I can appreciate all the good you’ve done, despite how you got here,” Wemberly admitted, “I guess I just wonder why you need so bad to be on top. Why resort to murder? Why rush the process with all this political hit-job junk?”
Famine’s fingers stopped their rhythmic motion abruptly. For some reason, his gaze turned towards the ceiling.
“To make my old man proud, I s’pose…”
