After a quick stop in Wellsford to poke our heads into a couple of op shops, we arrived in the town of Whangarei in time for a late lunch before heading out to Piet and Lisa's home, our stop for the next two nights. No stranger to driving on gravel roads in New Zealand, I found the winding lane peaceful, with farmlands extending on either side. Tucked away between all these wide expanses we found Piet and Lisa's house. After a roam around their property to visit the chooks, we hunkered down for the night, boiling pasta and trying to make friends with their hopelessly territorial cat. A friend of Piet's was staying in the house at the same time as us, but poor timing meant we passed like phantoms in the night, never meeting but only catching glimpses of proof of one another's existence.
