It’s a bit of both. Mae was born mentally ill, which of course severely impacts her personality, and she was born with her sense of passion, her sense of adventure, and her thrill-seeking nature. But being lucky enough to be born into a situation where she has two parents and a grandfather that love her as she is, as well as having Gregg, Bea, Angus and Casey around, have undoubtedly shaped her, as well. Mae’s not always the most sensitive person around, but if she didn’t have those good emotional and social outlets, it almost certainly would’ve been much, much worse. And, of course, being born in Possum Springs has shaped her as well. Mae would probably be much more willing to seek help for her problems and reach out to others if she were raised in, say, New York or San Francisco, as opposed to a dying, conservative small town in the middle of nowhere. And it’s unlikely her sense of humor would be as dark or macabre as it is without Granddad being there for her formative years.
