I think it just comes with the source material, tbh. There's a lot of ugly stuff in the book. Not necessarily HBO's fault. Though changing things to become rape is certainly hard to explain.
I'm basically just rehashing what that article was saying but it seems like the TV show is making things rapier than the books and when shooting a complicated sex scene maybe erring on the side of rape is not what you want to be doing?
The real question is seeing as how I stopped watching the show 2 seasons ago, why do I even care?

Yeah, I was just reading that. I stopped watching the show back in season 2 when they threatened to rape Brienne, but I was still pissed about the whole Daenerys falling in love with her rapist thing.
It amazes me that HBO is the same network that made Deadwood where women lived in an equally cruel world, like 50% of the show was set in brothels where the prostitutes were often in various states of undress, but none of it felt sexualized.
