Favorite Words in Horticulture
I had an idea on the way in to work today. Iād like to do a thing once a week where I talk about some of my favorite niche words from the profession. Iām going to appropriately start off with one of my absolute favorites that made a transition into everyday descriptions:
Precocious
I love this word. Some of it was that I was a precocious child so it was one of the firstĀ āalarmingly large words for your ageā that I parroted because I heard it frequently as a descriptor. Then I learned it actually originates from botanical descriptors. Queue heart-eyes. So what is a precocious plant?Ā
Saucer magnolias (Magnolia x soulangeana) just finished up here so I am incredibly biased on this example. A precocious plant is one that blooms before setting any leaves. Cherry, plums and apricots do this, as well as wisteria, redbuds, and in late summer lycoris lilies, or as I have genuinely heard them called, ānaked ladiesā. There are plenty more, but those are the ones I come across most frequently.Ā
Precocious plants create an absolutely stunning effect in the landscape, and they never fail to stop people and I absolutely love it. One of the first precursors to spring for me is messages and texts from folks asking meĀ āwhat is that pink tree flowering right now? Iāve seen one driving by and had to slow down and lookā. Every year I get at least one and it delights me. Anything that forcefully pulls people from the green blindness and makes them ask questions is a win in my estimations. So, thatās my first and favorite hort word!

We're featuring Marshadow!
To start things off, here's a Marshadow card and pin from my own collection! It was an impulse purshase a few months ago, but I'm very glad I bought it!
