Loka Town, The Happy Snack Bar and Gleams of Daylight by Chong Fei Giap as part of Loka Made (本土幻想). 2016.

Loka Made (本土幻想) is a Malaysian creative brand founded in 2015 by Chong Fei Giap and Audrey Chew. Having graduated from The One Academy with a major in Illustration, Chong worked as a commercial illustrator for six years before establishing Loka Made with his fellow classmate. The philosophy of Loka Made involves using the spirit of discovery to channel and reassemble elements local to the experience of Malaysia.

Chong, who is in charge of the brand’s idea creation and illustration, is inspired by his attachment to the culture and scenery of Malaysia. Several of Malaysia’s iconic locations, including the streets of Kuala Lumpur, Jalan Dato Bandar Tunggal and Little India, have become visual references for his work. Chong’s illustrations are often softly lit and dream-like, evocative of an idyllic, unruffled community. Thus, Loka Made remains focused on the child’s perspective, fusing the local and fantastical to build a visual answer to the nostalgia of childhood memories.
