Dream Lover (夢ä¸äşş) by Faye Wong (çč˛). 1994.
This song is a Cantonese cover of Dreams, one of the biggest hits of Irish alternative rock band, The Cranberries. Faye Wongâs rendition of the songâs ethereal and detached dreaminess is heavier, slower and denser. The Cranberriesâ popularity grew in Hong Kong after inspiring numerous Cantopop artists and heavily influencing Wongâs career.
Dream Lover is part of Wongâs 1994 Cantonese album Random Thoughts (čĄćäşćł). Since her 1993 album 100,000 Reasons Why, Wongâs musical image underwent a shift influenced by Western alternative artists such as Tori Amos and The Cocteau Twins. This album confirmed Wongâs move to a more alternative style and marked the drop of her typical classic pop image, revolutionizing mainstream Cantopop and eventually earning her the title as one the most renowned celebrities in Asia.
Dream Lover became an instant hit in Hong Kong after appearing in Wong Kar Waiâs Chungking Express (éĺşćŁŽć), which was also Wongâs acting debut (featured by sinθ here). In this film of lost, hopeless love in midst of a disconnected and bustling city, Wong plays an eccentric snack bar worker completely infatuated by a police officer portrayed by Tony Leung (ć˘ćĺ). In one of the filmâs most notable scenes, Wong is seen repeatedly entering her âdream loverâsâ apartment as she obsessively cleans and inspects his belongings in her usual quirky manner. The song adds an ethereal depth to the scene and accompanies the smitten, carefree nature of her character as she floats about her days.

I couldnât help myself when I saw this weekâs prompt When the dragons came. I hope you guys enjoy it. Itâs sad, sorry!
Cora stood staring at the smoldering remains of the small village. Her chest ached from grief and the acrid smoke still churning from the char surrounding her.  Tears stung her dry, red eyes and burned her cheeks as they spilled down her blistered skin.  She watched the survivors stumble from ruin to ruin, searching hopelessly for anything or anyone who survived the fiery hell that had rained down on them, not yet willing to accept the horrifying truth Cora knew was now their reality.  It was gone⌠all of it⌠everyone⌠ She sank to her knees as the sobs wracked her small body.
It had been just after sunset when her mother handed her a pail from beside the fireplace, âRun out to the well and fetch some water for the dishes, Cora.â The woman grinned mischievously as the girlâs tiny shoulders slumped. Â âIt is not fully dark yet. Â If you hurry, you will be back inside before the sky turns.â
âBut, ma,â she whined pitifully, âyou know I donâtâŚâ
âNo arguments. Â You must learn to control your fear. Â Go, before your father comes back and takes pity on you.â
Cora huffed in defeat and turned for the exit. Â Her heart thundered against her ribs as she pulled the wooden door wide and stared out into the darkening yard. Â She took a deep breath and eased out onto the steps, unable to swallow the whimper that tore from her throat. Â She hugged the pail tightly to her sternum, her little hands trembling and knuckles white from her grip on the handle.
She looked from side to side, then fixed her eyes on the well. Â âP-p-papa said to focus on the t-task. Â I j-just need to get the water and then I can go back inside.â Â She forced her little feet to shuffle forward, then as she left the porch and they met the dirt, she ran for the well. Â
Cold stone met her palms as she threw them forward to stop her momentum. Â Cora stared at the blocks beneath her hands and let her breathing steady. Â She had made it across the yard, now she had to fill the bucket. Â âI do this all the time for Papa. Â I can do it now.â Â She let her eyes slide from the stone and follow the wood up to the crank that would pull the bucket from the water below. Â It seemed so much higher in the fading light as if the growing darkness was lifting it out of reach.
She placed her pail on the ground and reached up, expecting the iron handle to dance away from her fingers, but the cold metal waited in its usual place. She spun the crank and let her weight pull it down as her father had taught her, then pushed, allowing the momentum to do the work. Â It squeaked with the weight of the bucket at the end of the rope, and Cora concentrated on the familiar sound and the feeling of accomplishment as the wooden rim peaked over the stone lip of the well.
She set the crank carefully, then pulled the bucket over the side a little too quickly. Â Water lapped over the side, and she gasped as the cold liquid splashed onto the front of her dress. Â âUgh!â Â It was only a little, but her mother would tease her for it. Â She filled her pail slowly, threw the empty bucket back over the side, and lifted her pail of water. Â She groaned inwardly at the weight. Â She wouldnât be able to hurry across the yard this time.
She sighed as she turned back toward the house, nearly running into her father. Â âPapa!â
The relief was apparent in her voice, and he chuckled, âYour mother is being cruel again, I see.â Â He took the pail from her and ruffled her hair. Â âYou did well, though. Â Iâm very proud of you.â
She threw her arms around his waist and buried her face in his stomach. Â âThank you, Papa,â she mumbled.
A shrieking roar rent the air, and Coraâs body shuddered violently. Â She had never heard anything so frightening and clawed at her father, searching for safety. Â âWhat was that, Papa?â Â She heard the pail hit the ground, and his strong arms snatched her up. Â
He ran toward the house, âDragons!â Â She clung to him, her little body trembling. Â She had never heard fear in her fatherâs voice before, never saw that look in his eyes. Â It made her chest tighten all the more, and she buried her face in his shoulder.
A great whoosh and wail from above forced her eyes skyward. Â A great funnel of flame lit the night, waves of heat slamming into her. Â The hot, angry wind ripped at her hair and clothing and tore at her lungs. Â Her father skidded and stumbled in an attempt to change the direction of his run. Â He fell to the ground, pulling Cora tight against him to protect her from the fall.
Another whoosh from above and the man rolled and shielded his daughter as he screamed, âLorna! Â No, No!â Â Cora felt him shudder around her, then he was gone. Â She looked up to see him running toward their flaming home. Â The fire burned bright and hot. Â Red, yellow, and blue danced into the darkened sky as the silhouette of her father disappeared into the flames.
Cora couldnât bring herself to say anything. Â She couldnât move. Â She sat in the dirt, watching the fire leap higher into the sky. Â She felt her skin pull tight around her face and arms as it chapped and blistered. Â Her eyes stung, and her lips cracked as the heat dried and burned them. Â The heat of the flames baking her skin was all she could feelâno fear of the night or the darkâas she waited hopelessly for her father to return. Â
