#webcomic debrief

so, we just finished Act 6 Act 5. I think now’s as good time as any to give my opinion on what ive read in Act 6.

lets start with the obvious: I Really Love the alpha kids. all of them. i adore them all so so much, including their inane teenage drama. None of these kids can talk to each other like normal people even if it ends up killing them. Which it does. They’ve been the most welcome addition to the cast for me and i want nothing but the best for them.

And the cherubs!!!!! oh my fucking GOD I love Calliope with all my heart. She might honestly be my favourite character right next to Tavros. I adore her so much and her relationship with herself, from such agonizing self-hate to a genuine desire to see the best things in the world. Including her SHIT ASS BROTHER CALIBORN!!!!! I hate him so much that I love him. I love that Lord English a truly cretinous fucking freak. I want him to die forever. His drawings are hilarious and his dialogue makes me laugh when it isnt making me viscerally uncomfortable (which is also really cool).

I’m also really excited on where this plot is heading. That ending of A6A5 was sooo fucking cool im insanely worried over everything ever and i love that in a story. So overall im pretty excited to keep going

However. i am. realllyyyyyyy. Reaaaaalllllyyyyyyyy. Starting to feel some problems arise.

When you've calmed down from the Gamtav and the EVERYTHING ELSE, wanna give your thoughts on it?

I realize now I never answered this, so even though we’ve just finished act 6 act 2 last night, I’ll share my feelings on act 5. but not because I calmed down on the gamtav thats still ongoing in my brain. but okay act 5:

it was honest to god really super awesomely FUN!!!!

I said it before in the very beginning, but I’ll say it again: as much as I absolutely do not believe in and would never ever recommend skipping the first 4 acts of homestuck… after having read all of act 5, I can honestly see why people felt inclined to do so. The trolls are such a charming cast and learning all about them and their messy teenage relationships and horrible actions was very charming to me. I love this kind of drama a lot even at my grown ass age. it fit in with the 4 kids so seamlessly that it’s honestly so surprising how late hussie had thought of them as a cast.

Their entire journey throughout this act was really fun too. Learning just how awfully big and time warpy the stakes are was really fun even if we lost like a bajillion cast members. The antagonists really stole the show too: though Noir is a little one note just due to his nature as a mutinous NPC, his relationship with Jade as Bec Noir was really charming and made the whole endless slaughter thing a lot easier to push through. Not to mention Doc Scratch’s whole deal… horrible horrible freak of a man but he was such a fun character, and his manipulation and grooming of the girls was honestly not a topic I thought would be So Explicit. and yet so soooo fun. and with how he ended up… eeeekkk im so excited to figure out more of Lord English. Also, there’s Gamzee. that was fun. Albeit horrifying.

all in all, I had a lot of fun with this act. I used to really hate time travel stuff on principle, and with the reputation homestuck has i assumed it would of course be the worst of it, but as I read more and more of it and understand the paradox spacetime shenanigans… it’s honestly not as hard as people make it out to be! sorry I keep saying that over and over but it’s really true! this is pretty easy to parse! And I love it!

there’s literally nothing better than two dudes who are friends making out sloppy style. Literally nothing better. and the fact that they have cute shitty rap sessions where Gamzee encourages Tavros to just INDULGE in what he wants to imagine and coaxes Tavros through it. and even if Tavros struggles through it and eventually comes back down to reality he DOES allow himself to indulge!! because Gamzee helps him!!! so sweetly!!! he’s genuinely the kindest to Tavros and thats truly all ive ever wanted for him during this entire FUCKING COMIC. especially incredible that Gamzee has these flushed feelings but despite the seemingly obvious rejection he gets right then, they were obviously still friends! EEEKKK GOD Tavros you needed to have consider that harder come ON

fave character: tavros and i dont careeee if its biased i dont care!!! i love him so much i just wanted him to be happy. jade and john are both tied for second though, jade is so fucking fascinating and ive really loved how her character is evolving lately, and john is so sweet

fave ship: gamtav bewitched me heart and soul,, though i get the feeling that with how gamzee’s been acting lately that might add a new twist to them? we’ll see. rosemary is really fun and compelling, and i love johnkat and johndave pretty equally at this point (sorry babe ik thats basically sacrilege to you wise johnkat truther)

favourite bit/repeating phrase: every single sbahj misspelling in the comic has made me laugh hard every time. i also love all of terezis drawings

favourite album/song: fav album is easily midnight crew. it’s really cohesive in a way some other albums aren’t. fav song so far is crystamanthequins, though desperado rocket chairs is really fun too

any theories: im really not much of an overarching theory person. even the one you explained to me that might not be canon, the ophiuchus 13th troll, sounds kinda farfetched to me. I guess my only theory is that lord english is either a player of a previous session, or that he’s a creation of the current players’s sessions, a-la the first guardians? idk!

also, regarding the exact page im on right now as of answering this ask…

Without spoiling the fast pass episodes, who was your favorite character, ship, moment? Anything else you wanna say?

favourite character: matte. hes so charming and pretty and sweet and awesome and i love all his weebness. also weirdly relatable despite not being anywhere near the level of wealth hes got.

favourite ship: mamani/daniel of courseeeee. god all their relationship issues and cute moments were the best I really truly adored all of it even when they scared me half to death

favourite moment: the pharmacy run bit was so good. really funny and cute. but also i really loved all of mamani/daniel’s early study sessions, esp when daniel was mean to him lol

ohhh so were doing this for webcomics now okay. anyway yes we just finished problem sleuth so now i will give my opinion of them

favourite character: pickle inspector easily. I just love pathetic meow meows and hes the most pathetic of all, so I found him really endearing. especially when he gets all crazy and shit with his imagination but hes still so awkward and useless with it sometimes. problem sleuth himself is really great too a very close second.

favourite page: really hard to say, especially since its been a while in between our reads. but id probably say page 304, “look through holes.” aka candy corn vampire. thats when i really realized why you were so excited to have candy corn when i sent it to you over a year ago. hussie really makes them look fun hakshajsh

recurring motifs: i love the weird garden/fractal thing this story has going on? like with the afterlife flower and the comb raves and all. its really cute. also cool team poses :)
