The Somos SELA/We Are SELA narrative and photography project went to Bandini Park this weekend to support the Ovarian Psycos Clitoral Mass LA ride!
Somos SELA: Art Installation and Narrative Project August 6th, 11:30A-1:30P at Bandini Park, (4725 Astor Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90040) As part of Proyecto Vecindad's work to empower our SELA communities, we realize that the direct experiences of our neighbors are often ignored. The little information that highlights the Southeast is often filled with negative scandals and is published by people who are not familiar with our Southeast L.A. experiences. WE ARE SELA is an intent to create a counter narrative to this reality. Come and join us for another sessions of awesome story telling or simply come take a picture in front of our mobile community mural. Proyecto Vecindad and East Yard Communities for Environmental Justice will also be providing information about the work we are doing in the community and how you can join our organizing efforts!
They always trying to tell us what to do and how to say it. It was no different in Huntington Park.

SELA's got a great history in activism and commUNITY power. Here you see demonstrators in 1996 hold up signs to protest Proposition 187 and other immigration policies, outside City Hall in Huntington Park where Gov. Pete Wilson was speaking.

This is a clipping from the Los Angeles Sentinel, an African American newspaper founded in 1934 by Col. Leon H. Washington. Look at the violent response this man had to an African American family moving into the neighborhood in Lynwood. Documenting #SELAhistory also means discussing racism in the Southeast. We must talk about this, as racism is not a thing of the past.

This picture accompanied the story of 25 tenants at the Bell Gardens apartment building, located at 5531 Gotham St, who refused to pay rent in protest of the terrible conditions of their building and a lack of response by the landlords.
