tw school shootings etc (long post)
hello all. school does not feel safe. It hasn’t felt safe but now even more so. Last school year in march we had a shooting happen at the park near my school. This caused the school district to start a new weapons detection program and have it pilot at my school.
The detections system made very few people feel safer. It is well known that it doesn’t actually detect small knives or guns; to the extent that someone accidentally brought In a five in knife without being caught. While they don’t detect those, they do detect Chromebook and 3-ring binders, so all chromebooks must be removed before entry, and many false alerts go off due to binders or other metal combinations. The statistic they give is that “nearly 50% of students feel safer” which is not that many students, although our school is quite large. At another school within the district they’ve started a phone-reduction plan by putting them in magnetic pouches that can only be opened at the entrance/exits at the end of the day. My middle school already did this: it failed quickly when everyone figured out if you slam them against something they open.
soon enough my school will not only have strict weapon detection systems, but the phone packets too. I don’t want this to happen. I feel scared and alone enough at school as it is without removing the only method to contact my parents I have. If this happens, I may start bringing my old flip phone back to school just so I have any method of contact in case of an emergency. last years emergency was one of the scariest moments of my life, and even though they never came inside the building, I felt the fear of if they had. We lost two students that day, and I can only imagine how many more if they wouldn’t have been at that park. The weapons detection systems are nothing more than a placebo to make us feel better. I hate it. Every day is more dystopian
(Yes I’m American if that wasn’t obvious)
