Calypso braced for another blast as shrapnel came raining down on them, a Cabal ship zipping off in an opposite direction from where they and the refugees huddled beneath their shelter.
“How are we looking?” They asked, sending out their feelers for any indication of Cabal presence nearby.
“Everyone’s intact, we should keep moving,” Naos called from where she was perched just at the top of the debris, barely peeking out from underneath a half fallen cement wall they had taken refuge under.
“Alright everyone, stay close to your partner, I’ll be taking up the front and Calypso will-“ an explosion shook them, everyone gasping or crying out as three Cabal crested the small incline they were situated on.
Naos leapt down, Calypso joining her at her side as they fired on the intruders, the first going down easily enough. Calypso sent a grenade flying, small purple explosives separating and following a Cabal that fled. The third dropped a shield, attempting to hold out longer.
“When we take this guy down take them out front, I’ll make sure we’re not followed,” Naos said, yelling over the residual gunfire and emergency sirens that were nearly a constant background to their conversation.
Calypso gave a sharp nod, moving to flank the lone legionary when something hit them. It wasn’t physical, although it took them a moment to realize it, it felt like a phantom kick to the gut as all the air left their lungs. They felt their knees give way as their head began to pound, their heart racing in their ears. They had squeezed their eyes shut, trying to dull the pain, and even though they hadn’t relied on their physical eyes since Andal’s accident, it took a moment to notice the darkness. They were enveloped by it, their void vision completely cut off, instead of the galaxies of purple and colorful guardians, it was complete blackness. Their breath caught in their throat, frantically feeling for anything to brace themselves on. They heard shots over their shoulder, panic rising as they realized they were truly blind in the middle of a battle.
“Athena!”
“Calypso,” her voice was weak, barely above a whisper in her helmet.
“What’s happening, I’m blind,” Calypso hated how their voice peaked harshly.
“The light… it’s gone…”
The world seemed to melt into madness around them, everything too loud, too hectic, too much. They felt their skin crawl, sweat pouring down their face, breathing becoming rapid.
“Naos… Naos!” They cried, voice cracking as they tried to orient themselves.
“Naos! Naos I can’t see!” They sounded like a lost child, voice breaking, tears mixing with the sweat that ran down their face.
“Naos! Naos!” They didn’t know how many timed they cried her name, but they felt hands on their shoulders, pulling them up the incline they had started to descend earlier.
“I’m here, I’m here baby, I’m here,” Naos’ voice cut through the chaos, her hands clasping hard but not hurting onto their arms as she hauled them upwards.
“What’s wrong?” Naos asked.
Calypso could feel their hands over their armor, checking for wounds they assumed.
“I’m blind, I’m blind,” Calypso struggled to keep their voice subdued and even, but it had already broken down, their hands seeking out Naos’ helmeted head.
“The light, I felt it,” Naos said “I felt it leave me,” she sounded as confused as Calypso felt.
“How,” they pleaded, not really at Naos, rather aimed at the large floating orb that was supposed to protect them.
“I don’t know, but we’re going to find out once we’re safe. You hold my hand and you don’t let go alright? Understand?” Naos asked.
Calypso took a moment before they nodded, trying to focus on calming their breathing for a second.
“Yes, yes I understand.”
“Good, good,” Calypso felt her hand on the back of their neck, bringing their helmets to meet each other.
“I’ve got you little star, stay with me.”
Calypso took a deep breath before they rose to their feet with the help of Naos.
“Alright, you stay on our asses, you there, you got a gun, can you make sure we don’t lose anyone at the back?”
“Yes!” Calypso heard a woman respond, they had seen her earlier clutching the hand of another woman who was just slightly taller than her.
“Okay, let’s go!” Naos called, her fingers squeezing Calypso’s.
They felt Naos tug on their hand before trudging forward, trying their best not to trip over debris. They tried to remember what had been around them before they had gone dark, but in their adrenaline of battle it had all but been forgotten. It was like walking through a cave without light, the darkness reminding them of when they had lost their leg in the Hive caves of the moon. That same fear seemed to grip them and they realized, if they had lost their sight then what had Naos lost? How had it felt when the light left her? If it was anything like Calypso’s experience it was painful and jarring, and yet she soldiered on, grip tight on Calypso, leading a group of refugees. She was fearless, and as Calypso found their footing again they focused on that connection. Keep moving. Stay alive. Stay close.
