Carlos Nielbock’s father was an African-American U.S. soldier in World War II stationed in Germany after the war, where he met his mother, a white woman.
“They fell in love and out came me,” says Nielbock. “The army didn’t like that so much, so they sent him back. I stayed behind with my mother in Germany.”
Years later, Nielbock came to Detroit in search of his father, but ended up discovering a home.
