Chapter 44: Asphodel

“Elain?” he whispered, and it was this: her name on his lips, a prayer- a plea- the last ember of light fading atop a ruined tower- that had her crossing the space between them.

With @pinkrasberryfish posting the final chapter of A Court of Blood and Mercy today, and @bloomingdarkgarden posting hers on Sunday for WBITD … I’m feeling this strange juxtaposition of pride, grief, joy, homesickness, and gratitude for these fanfic writers. These stories that were YEARS in making, and are now finally coming to an end.

I think the entire Elriel community would agree when I say you’ve kept the whimsy alive, whether it’s an Autumn cottage or an ancient forest.

You did not write—you bled. With Elain’s defiant softness. Azriel’s quiet longing. The very ache of them.

And I felt that.

So thank you. You’ve stolen a sliver of my soul, and I’m happy to part with it. Now I can’t possibly match what you’ve given me in words, but here are some fresh roses that I grew from my garden.
