HIII V!! oh my most beloved fic of all time!!! i would love to talk about wbhf!!!

this fic started with the line: Alex Claremont-Diaz is having a crisis. i wrote like two lines, said… what am i even talking about, stopped writing. and then i came back one (1) day later, tweaked it, and the ENTIRE opening to wbhf sprung into existence in one sitting

(it goes on from there for a couple more pages, but it is very very similar to the final product so i won’t bore y’all)

basically, in that first writing session, i wrote alex’s email. and then i was thinking about how much i loved the emails in the book, and how that might translate to an alex and henry who didn’t know each other, and i stumbled through a few more scenes!! and then i eventually i “brainstormed” (talked to myself on paper about what should happen in the story):

you may notice that this whole plot brainstorm happened like two weeks after the original opening was written! that is because i suck at plotting properly and i basically write a bunch of scenes until i have to sit down and Think about how they’re all going to fit together (often ends up in a weird bullet-point list as above)

anyways i was worried that the ending was rushed, because A) i clearly had no idea how to end it and B) i really wanted to post it before the movie came out, so i couldn’t take my time. but in retrospect i think it ended pretty well!!

so once again, thank you for writing that wonderful story

“Giving up?” Alex says, cocking an eyebrow.

The guy pauses. “I’m sure I don’t know what you mean,” he says.

Alex gestures at the table, the way Alex’s own laptop is the only one that remains. “You’re giving up your claim to my table,” he grins. “Lovely doing business with you, man.”

He gets an eye roll in response. “You are a deeply perplexing person,” he says. “I’ve simply finished my work. And now I’m going home. You should try it sometime, rather than spending six hours here.”

Alex’s eyebrows fly up. “And how would you know if I spent six hours here?”

Gratifyingly, the guy’s cheeks go pink, spreading up to the tips of his ears. “It’s not hard to extrapolate,” he says, jutting out his chin slightly. “When you’re here when I get a coffee in the morning and still here when I come to grade papers in the afternoon, it makes it quite obvious that you don’t have a life.”

Alex snorts. “That was almost mean,” he grins. “I’m impressed.”

“Goodbye,” says his café nemesis, and Alex enjoys the very impressive view as he walks away before turning back to H’s email, feeling very satisfied with himself. His coffee shop nemesis looks pretty when he’s annoyed, and now he has his table to himself, as he should. What a great afternoon.
