There is an album by Coyote Kid called Skeleton Man that I can only describe as Southern Gothic. I am recommending this album with the knowledge that there is like a 70% chance you have already heard it and all of this is me accidentally dissecting musical inspirations for A Cowpoke's Sweetheart. The entire album is incredible so I apologize for how long this is.
The New Dark Age: what I would imagine would play as Hamal first walks into town, and Narinder looks over his preparations for his journey.
Femme Fatale: This one is excellent for Narinder and Hamal, really expresses the yearning between them and how they can both be deeply dangerous individuals. Could also work for Hamal and Deneb for that same reason.
Tough Kids: I mean that's just Hamal and their siblings.
Prowler: Basically Deneb's theme song. I mean, some fucked up monster that hunts out of some twisted form of love? It's him.
Strange Days: Very much a song about their entire journey together. If it were a show/movie I would imagine this as the travelling motif.
Dark Science: It's Narinder, he's the witch doctor. The themes and vibes are so incredibly on point for him.
Electric Lover: "It starts with a needle and thread woven into your neck". This is a love song about Narinder bringing Hamal back from the dead.
Vision in Black: Ominous, Ominous, Ominous. There is something ominous looming over your fic. I may not comprehend what it is yet, but this song is about whatever blade it is that hangs over their neck. Also Narinder thinking depressed about how much he wants to kiss that sheep.
Destroyer of Worlds: This one is perfect for both Hamal and Narinder. I mean, it's a morbidly humorous song that is literally all death puns.
Undertaker: I want to say this is Hamal, but that doesn't feel quite right. The song is a warning about someone who is dangerously competent and comfortable in death. No, this is about The Lamb.
Backbone: Narinder failing in his convictions because he's gay for the sheep. The lyrics are all "hey, that's a bad idea" but the tone of the song is bright and clearly all too happy about the love thing.
Run: Fuck, I mean, this could be for anyone. They're all running from something.
Skeleton Man: This gives the vibe of the penultimate confession between Narinder and Hamal witch is either a very good thing or a very very bad thing.
I'd heard a couple of these songs on their own, but I had never sat down and listened to this full album until now! I think all of your interpretations are spot on. There's also some stuff coming down the pipeline that this could apply to, so I'm very pleased to have a whole host of new songs to add to the playlist.
Thank you for sharing this!! It a lot of fun to just pop on an album and considering your impressions.
