Movmnt Magazine aspires to bridge the gap between pop culture and todayās real talent, and recognize artists over fame junkies. We aim to bring fashion, dance, music and pop culture, together as a lifestyle.
The real talent Movmnt Magazine caught up with today was Mason McCarthyĀ - we grabbed a few minutes with him backstage at the San Francisco leg of label Way Outās national tour. McCarthy is the bassist and backup-vocalist for Jake Puckerman-led band Reflective Smoke, well known for story-songs like Let It HappenĀ and Alter Ego.
How are you feeling? Homesick already?
āGod, no, not homesick.ā Mason chuckles and shakes his head.Ā āIāve never been very, like, tethered, so this is awesome - I love being on the move, seeing different places and so many people. Itās been totally awesome so far, but Iām sure the pace will wear on me eventually.ā
Which acts have you most enjoyed watching?
āOh, man, itās hard to pick a favorite. I really like Wildeās stuff, and Rachel Berryās - solo acts are so hardcore, yāknow? Itās realer somehow, just you and the music and - yeah, theyāre both really awesome ladies. Uh, in terms of groups, Cool Cool Cool is really - uh, cool.ā Mason laughs.Ā āEureka Serpantās also way out there, I love their vibes.ā
Do you have any surprises planned?
āIf I told you, it wouldnāt be a surprise, would it?ā Mason grins impishly and raises his hands in defense.Ā āOkay, yeah, I got some stuff in the works, but really -Ā ātill everythingās a little more settled itās just that: plans.ā
Who is someone youāve been getting closer to on tour?
āActually, Ryder, from Mercedes and the Oracle? He and I were roommates back in college. Itās been awesome to catch up with him. Everybody else is too intimidating for me still.ā
Are there any rumors you want to confirm or dispute?
āI donāt...really think people are talking much about me? Dāyou wanna start one? I can neither confirm nor deny that Iām a member of the Illuminati. Howās that for a quote?ā
Which show are you most excited for?
āLike, which place?ā Mason blinks.Ā āHonestly, man, I never know where weāre going till they tell us, and even then, I never remember for long. Sorry. Iām looking forward to all of them, though, I really am, especially the ones in cities Iāve never been to and wouldnāt go to otherwise.ā
Have you made any mistakes? Have any regrets?
āLike...in life? Or in the past week?ā Mason chuckles and waves a hand.Ā āMan, next question. I donāt believe in regrets. If itās fun, itās fun, and if it bites you, itās your own dang fault.ā
How is this tour compared to your past tours? Or is this your first tour?
āI mean, I guess I ātouredā with my parents when we were kids, but...we were kids, and it doesnāt count, so basically Iām a tour virgin! Which means this is totally putting all my other tours to shame.ā Mason laughs.Ā āReally, though, itās been totally wild. Iām pretty sure Iām heading towardĀ āoverwhelmed by awesomenessā territory and Iām gonna need to crash soon, but ātill then, Iām just trying to live it up, yāknow? You only get so many firsts, and I want this to be a good one.ā
What expectations did you have, and is the tour meeting up to them?
āI try not to have expectations, especially not for totally awesome once in a lifetime stuff like this tour. I mean hopefully not literally onceĀ in a lifetime, but you know what I mean. Once so far. I tried not to have any expectations so I couldnāt be disappointed, but I still hoped for awesome music and cool people, and tourās definitely living up to that!ā

We got the exciting opportunity to catch up with Cool Cool Coolās Front Woman - the famed and infamous Tina CC. Despite being busy on the worldwide Way Out tour, we managed to get Tina to sit down and tell us a little bit about her experience, her recent scandals, and the direction sheās been going in musically.
Known for such hits as Heads Will Roll and the tear inducing Maps, Tina has made a name for herself in indie rock over the last decade. Her Cool Cool Cool performances have become known for her outrageous displays and her unique vocals.Ā
I know tourās just getting started, but are you feeling? Homesick already?
āItās hard notĀ to feel a little homesick when you live in the best city in the world. Iām not saying Iām homesick because Iām not a rookie, but I amĀ excited for the New York show. Youāre not going to want to miss it, folks.ā
Do you have something special planned for the New York show, then?
āCome on, Derek. Even if I did, I couldnāt tell you. Youāre just going to have to show up and see.ā
Which acts have you most enjoyed watching?
āIāve been touring with Eureka Serpent for longer than theyāve been on the label, so get ready for a lame, unsurprising answer. I really love the band, just as people, but their music is really exactly my style. Iād listen to them even if I didnāt know them personally. I try not to miss a Eureka set if I can help it, even if it means leaving my show make-up on for just a little too long. Iāve also really loved listening to Bone Apple Tea and Puddle of Peace. Itās so cool to tour with them, because weāve been personal friends for a while now.ā
And youāve been collaborating with them too, right?
āRight. Marley and I did a Janis Joplin cover together, and we pretty much changed the music game...in my less than humble opinion, at least.ā
You might not be humble, but youāre also not wrong. Do you have any other surprises planned?
āIām not spilling any more secrets, man. I told you. I may have famously loose lips, but Iām keeping āem shut this time. Youāll just have to wait and see.ā
Who is someone youāve been getting closer to on tour?
āNow youāre just trying to get me into trouble, arenāt you? Iāve been hanging out more with Jesse, which has been so much fun. Iāve always really respected him as a professional, but Iāve been growing some personal respect for him as well. Marley Rose, too. I know that answer might confuse a lot of people, but we really are learning a lot more about each other on a lot of different levels. We have more in common than we ever really knew before the tour brought us together.ā
Now you have a man in common, too, right?
āNo comment. But, Rachel Berry is another person Iām getting to know on a personal level. ā
The two of you have had a little rivalry in the past, havenāt you?
āI might not use the word rivalry, but we both like a little friendly competition. That hasnāt changed, donāt worry. Weāre still pushing each other to be our best selves, and the best musicians we can be. But donāt be surprised if you catch us sipping margaritas poolside. Thatās all Iām saying.ā
Fair enough. Are there any rumors you want to confirm or dispute?
āMost of the rumors about me have been confirmed on camera, sadly.ā
Oh, thatās right-
āDonāt lie. I know you didnāt forget.ā
Okay, but how did that happen? Youāve been pretty vague about it all so far.Ā
She sighs, looking the slightest bit uncomfortable for the first time in the interview.
āI want to blame alcohol, but itās probably just my classic recklessness combined with some good booze. It happens, you know? Iām not the first person it happened to. I guess the one rumor I want to dispute is that the video was leaked purposely. It really was an accident...on both sides.ā
Youāre still sticking up for him, even after your less than private break up?
āYou saw that?! Man, you did your research. Okay, first of all...it wasnāt a break up. It was a disagreement between two friends who are...probably not friends anymore. Thatās all I really want to say on that.Ā
Can we get back to the music now?ā
Of course. Which show are you most excited for?
āNew York. The answer is always New York.ā
Have you made any mistakes? Have any regrets?
āI donāt have any regrets, but mistakes? Iāve made mistakes. Mistake number one...cameras. Never again. Cameras are outlawed around me, unless Iām the one holding it...or I have my shirt on. I have a lot more that Iām grateful for, though. That outweighs the not-so positive things.ā
What are you grateful for, then?
āMainly just that my boobs arenāt on the internet...yet. Just kidding.ā
How is this tour compared to your past tours?Ā
āBigger...but, you know what I always say. The bigger, the better.ā
What expectations did you have, and is the tour meeting up to them?
āIf I had expectations, letās say theyāre dead and gone now. Iām just trying to take things one day at a time.ā
Electro-pop singer Kitty Wilde sits down with our own very Jonathan Ringen before the San Francisco show where she will be closing out Stage One of the night to learn more about the tour and the rest of the Way Out artists.
How are you feeling? Homesick already?
You could definitely say that Iām homesick already. I have been given such an amazing opportunity with this tour, so I canāt complain at all. Iāve been having such a fun time so far and weāre only on our first week of the tour so I canāt wait to see how the rest of this tour goes.
Which acts have you most enjoyed watching?
Of course, I have enjoyed my boyfriendās band, Puddle of Peace and Bone Apple Tea. Other than that, Rachel Berry and Reflective Smoke have been my favorite acts so far. I havenāt gotten to see everybody play yet so this is subject to change.
Do you have any surprises planned?
I have a few, yes. And they are more than worth the wait so I wonāt give any spoilers just yet.
Who is someone youāve been getting closer to on tour?
The one person that Iāve gotten closer to on this tour is Rachel. She is such an amazing artist and I loved watching her shows and just hanging out. She really is as sweet as she seems and we get along quite well. We are so very similar, but also different as well.
Are there any rumors you want to confirm or dispute?
I am one of the lucky few that have not had any rumors going on so far. I donāt listen to rumors anyway and my fans know who I am so I know they wouldnāt listen to them either. Right now, though, that is not something that I have to worry about.
Which show are you most excited for?
I think Iām most excited for my hometown show, Virginia Beach. I think itās going to be an interesting one for the books and IĀ canāt wait.
Have you made any mistakes? Have any regrets?
Iām human so of course, Iāve made myĀ fair share of mistakes. I think as humans itās okay to make mistakes and own up to them, which I believe that I have. As for regrets, I donāt have any. As cliche as it sounds, I have never been one to live my life with regrets.
How is this tour compared to your past tours? Or is this your first tour?
This is my very first tour like worldwide tour. I mean Iāve been to various bars and stuff to do little shows, but I donāt consider them a tour like this one.Ā
What expectations did you have, and is the tour meeting up to them?
I didnāt have any specific expectations for this tour, but it is living way past anything that I could have ever imaged or thought up. I get such a high when I am on stage and itās intoxicating in every possible way.

Recently, altweb dot com - the number one news source for up and coming artists on the rock and independent scene - caught up with Rachel Berry, former child star and current music sensation. With one show down and 27 more to go, we can already tell sheās one of the shows to watch - and wanted to see how she felt about life on the road.
ALT WORLD DOT COM : How are you feeling? Homesick already?
RACHEL BERRY : I am a little homesick - I didnāt get to spend a lot of time in New York until I left the limelight at 17, and now that Iāve spent over a decade there, I hate to be away from it. But we get to go to some amazing places, including myĀ hometown, so I know itāll be worth it in the end.Ā
AWDC : Which acts have you most enjoyed watching?Ā
RB : I managed to catch a lot of Cool, Cool, Coolās set last night, which was incredible - that duet between Tina and Marley especially - and of course I went to Puddle of Peaceās. Currently, Indigo and I are sharing a stage so I got to watch her before my set and she blew me away, but there are so many phenomenal artists on this tour that I hope to get the chance to see everyone in action at some point.Ā
AWDC : Do you have any surprises planned?
RB : Of course! Who doesnāt? Right now Iām planning on a big surprise for San Fran with a fellow artist, and a few others and I have already planned collaborations during the course of this trip.Ā
AWDC : Who is someone youāve been getting closer to on tour?
RB :Ā Where to begin? Thereās Sam, obviously, since the two of us are dating and finally get to spend more time together since weāre in the same location now. Marley Rose - we had a big get together at her house before we started the tour, and sheās an absolute doll. Kitty Wilde and I have been hanging out some, and of course Jesse St. James and I have some potential plans in the works. My drummer, Emily, says Iām a talent succubus - I go around and drink from the talent of others to make myself greater. So Iāll be doing a lot of that this tour.Ā
AWDC : Are there any rumors you want to confirm or dispute?
RB : - Rachel laughs - I donāt know how many rumors are out there yet, especially since it feels like twitter is spawning them by the hour. I suppose the only thing I want to say is that thereās only one man who holds my heart right now, and I donāt see that changing anytime soon - everyone else Iām seen with is just a friend, and perhaps some of these people that Iām supposedly sleeping with are really just future duet partners.Ā
AWDC : Which show are you most excited for?
RB : New York, without a doubt. Itās my home, and itās where Iāve spent the past few years cultivating myself as an artist. Plus, Iāll get to see my dads, and my cat, who I unfortunately had to leave behind this go around. And thereās nothing prettier than New York in October - I canāt wait for it.
AWDC : Have you made any mistakes? Have any regrets?
RB : Who hasnāt? I think life is always going to be a learning experience, and Iām sure some of the decisions Iāve made in the past werenāt the smartest. I donāt know if Iād say I regret any of it, though - after all, itās made me who I am today. And if I get to be considered aĀ ābadass new indie starā, then clearly I made some good choices along the way.Ā
AWDC : How is this tour compared to your past tours?
RB : In the past, it was always just me and my girls in a van that spent half the time breaking down on us. Weād play a venue that could hold maybe 300 people if we were lucky, and I spent the rest of the night doing shots at the bar with my fans. Itās a very intimate experience, and one I wouldnāt change for the world, but this is a whole different show - I think if I started doing shots with my fans on stage, Sugar might have a heart attack!Ā
AWDC : What expectations did you have, and is the tour meeting up to them?
RB : My only real expectation during this is to learn from my peers; some of them have been in the music industry for over a decade, and no matter what anyone says, itās very different from the acting industry. I just want to have fun, and play my music. If I get launched into superstardom - Rachel laughs - well, then thatās just a bonus, isnāt it?
Catch Rachel Berry and the rest of the Way Out! line up on tour this fall. -AWDC

Some additional Tina headcanons about stuff & things.
Anxiety TW, Depression TW.
PERSONA
Tinaās stage persona started as just that - a persona. For most of her life, Tina was quiet...shy...anxious. When she started performing, it was an acting job, too. A way for her to be anyone and anything other than her weak, quiet, pushover self. But after ten years of being a loud, commanding person...itās become her. A big part of her. Maybe even the real her. The lines have blurred to the point that she doesnāt know anymore.
Another aspect of her persona is just outgoingness, and utter ridiculous. Growing up, Tina was the perfect child. She got good grades, she kept her head down, she rarely got into trouble. This is probably why she performs as ridiculously as she does, doing things like spitting water on herself (and the crowd) and deep throating microphones.
The only time her anxiety still creeps in is when sheās alone, quiet, in her bed...and the outrageous person she pretends to be in the lights of the stage fades away.
SOUND
Tinaās music started as loud, brutal, and ugly...in the best way possible. Itās what attracted so many people to Cool Cool Cool. A loud, strong woman screaming into a microphone had a certain appeal to a lot of people - especially women who were like the young Tina. The shy, quiet women with rage deep inside of their bones.
Tina has spent the last decade giving this angry version of herself a voice...a voice sheād not been allowed to have when she was younger. Itās come to the point that the anger inside of her has, mostly, subsided. Her bitterness has been properly expressed, through music and lyrics.
Now, itās the soft parts of herself that are craving expression. This is all too obvious in the latest Cool Cool Cool album, Itās Blitz! Of course, because of this there were many fans who werenāt so happy with the sound of the new album. Slower, softer songs like Little Shadow and Soft Shock gave her an arena to voice her vulnerabilities, and the deeper feelings she tends to keep on lock.
Tina has been looking for a new, bigger arena to write her softer sound...in a place where she wonāt be expected to scream and shout allĀ of the time.
LYRICS
Many of Tinaās lyrics arenāt about her or her experiences at all. Sheās a writer and a storyteller. Some of her songs are about dreams sheās had, or other people sheās known. Only a select few of the songs that she writes are truly diary entries.
Maps, for example, is the song that feels the most her. This is likely why itās her second most popular song, despite having a softer edge. She wrote Maps after her first tour, which ultimately ended the relationship between she and her long time boyfriend, Anthony. Tina doesnāt feel sheās written anything as deep and raw as Maps was, and isnāt sure how to get back into that headspace...the softness, combined with the rawness that can only be created by a lost love seems impossible to find.
Still, Tina has fun writing music, even if it doesnāt feel as real and as herĀ as Maps did.
Turn Into is her all time favorite song that sheās written, lyrically. Written about the feeling when her ex boyfriend began to move on. When he began dating other women, he also began to cut off their close friendship. This felt like the true end of her relationship, and Tina found herself wanting to move on in the way heād been able to, but ultimately knowing that she couldnāt give her heart away again.
LOVE
Tina knows love. Sheās experienced a lot of almost lovers, and has had three big, important relationships in her life. The last serious relationship she had was seven years ago, when she was still new in the industry. She felt the industry tear her relationship apart, pushing distance between she and her beloved that neither of them were prepared for.
There is a certain coldness and a certain distance that Tina keeps between herself and her lovers now. While she claims to be open to love, she subconsciously sabotages herself and pushes it away at the same time. Thereās a big part of her that feels as though love is only good for writing new lyrics, and is ultimately fleeting.
At this point in her life and career, she prefers physical and casual relationships, and isnāt really trying to get too deep. Thereās still a cage around her heart from her last heart break, and abandonment wounds on top of it all.
FASHION
Tinaās fashion is eclectic. She ranges from bright, colorful, confusing ensembles and dark, edgy looks. Thereās no in between. Sheās either an annoyingly bright rainbow or an edgy rain cloud.
HAIR
Tinaās hair is ever changing. Since her early teenage years, sheās been notorious for having ever changing, rainbow colored hair. Every time she goes on tour she attempts to keep her long, luscious locks...but eventually cuts it all off, due to maintenance problems.
ANXIETY
Tina experiences both social anxiety, general anxiety, and depression. All of these issues have been diagnosed, although Tina hasnāt attended therapy or been medicated in almost a decade. Instead, she chooses to self medicate with marijuana and alcohol.
