redesign of the Reef Waveskipper, a species of maritime dragon filling a similar role of a large seagull. in order is the normal appearance VS the breeding colours, which both sexes get in spring when they migrate to seasides to nest on cliffs. their breeding grounds are almost always adjacent to shallow seas with reefs, and they feed on any prey they can catch, but especcially shellfish. below is an old design from 2017-ish
Smaugust day 13 - Colourful
An adult Blue-side Waveskipper in summer colouration.
Waveskippers are colourful dragons on the small side, who are mostly seen around coasts. Their hind legs have a decorative membrane visually similar to the "quadwings" of the dinosaur Microraptor - although they do nothing for the animals flight, and are mostly for display and paddling.
Although most species are seen on coastlines, the Blue-side Waveskipper is one seen commonly inland, at wetlands and lakesides. The norm for the family, in the summer the Blue-side sports striking red and blue markings for use in courting display, and is otherwise a decorative black and white. Their colouration can vary in populations depending how far away from the coast they are, with the animals closer to the seaside having less red.
