Have you seen Wave Makers (2023)?
Yes
Partially
No, but I've heard of it
Never heard of it
Original title: Jîn-soán ê Lâng: Chō-lōng-chiá | 人選之人—造浪者.
Finished my 2nd rewatch of Wave Makers and I love it as much as my first watch if not even more. So interesting to me for both political and cultural reasons, so many well-written characters, amazing plot. Someday I'm going to write my essay about how the show satirically displays cultural expectations for women (with 朱俪雅 & 张亚静 and see if I can find another one) because the culture exhibited in the show is one of the reasons I find this show so interesting. P.S if anyone knows why chien cheng-li/简成力 knew that/thought that chang ya-ching/张亚静 is Hakka/speaks Hakka to her I would love to know because I didnt' really get that part. (Because I"m pretty sure he speaks Hakka?) Anyways yeah. Love this show so much.
Netflix show unleashes wave of MeToo allegations in Taiwan | Women's Rights News | Al Jazeera
Self-ruled island’s reckoning with sexual harassment and assault has been a long time coming.
Nearly six years since the #MeToo campaign took the world by storm, Taiwan’s reckoning with sexual harassment and assault has been a long time coming.
Taiwan’s first experience with #MeToo was relatively small compared with other places, although there were some well-publicised incidents. One included the release of a novel by 26-year-old writer Lin Yi-han that drew on her experiences of being groomed and sexually assaulted by her middle school teacher. The writer later took her own life, setting off a national discussion.
This time, it was the Taiwanese Netflix drama Wave Makers that inspired women to act.

Wave Makers Episode 1 Review
Summary Taiwan is going to choose a new president. And its two dominant political parties are in for a long, hard slog. Weng Wenfang, the thirty-something Assistant Director of the Justice Party, finds herself in the middle of it.
This is Wenfang’s world and we’re all just living in it Wave Makers opens at a massive political rally in Taipei. The camera follows Weng Wenfang, making it clear that Wave Makers is primarily centred on her perspective. She is our Main Character, our heroine, our Commander Shepard, if you will. The thirty-something Assistant Director of the Justice Party (Gongzengdang, or GZD), Wenfang is doing everything she can together with her team to help their candidate, Ling Yue Zhen, beat her incumbent rival from the Democracy & Peace Party (Minghedang, or MHD).
Wave Makers’ set-up of Wenfang’s character is something to behold.
Oh god she has dimples
