The Mazatili (singular Mazatil) are animals who were once people. This unusual transformation is a result of a curse which has been looming over Teoti'ctlan since the death of the gods. It is believed that it's caused by the consumption of flesh of another human being.
The animal which one ends up becoming after becoming a Mazatil is usually reflected by their personality and behaviour. In most cases, the person transforms into a carnivore or an omnivore. They are easy to identify, as they are often larger than regularly-sized animals; their unusual colors and patterns are another giveaway. Some of the distinguishing features from their former bodies still remain in certain cases (eg. a Cuauhtlicatl Mazatil can be identified by its horns or scales).
The transformation begins as soon as the flesh is ingested. This painful process often takes up to several days. Once the humanoid body has been replaced with one of an animal, the Mazatil is still able to talk for a limited amount of time. After a period of one to three months, it loses its ability to speak, yet its mind remains the same as it was before.
It is nearly impossible to revert one's transformation into a Mazatil. However, it is said that the process can be temporarily stopped or even taken control of if one is in posession of divine objects, such as god-hearts. Some Mazatils protected by such items were often able to switch between their humanoid and animal form at will. The effects of such objects would wear off once the person was no longer the owner of it. After the transformation is complete, there is no way to revert it - even with the help of a god-heart.
