February 28, 2025 - Red-cheeked Wattle-eye (Platysteira blissetti or Dyaphorophyia blissetti) These wattle-eyes are found in forests and thickets, sometimes near water, in a spotty range from Guinea and Sierra Leone east to western Cameroon. Foraging alone, in pairs, and in family groups and often joining mixed-species flocks, they feed on insects, though the details of their diet are unknown. Probably breeding between November and April, as well as in August and September, depending on the area of their range, they are thought to be monogamous, though little else is known about their breeding behavior.

April 20, 2024 - Chestnut Wattle-eye (Platysteira castanea) Found in parts of western and central Africa, these wattle-eyes live in forests and swampy areas. Foraging in pairs and family groups and often joining mixed-species flocks, they eat arthropods, small fruits, and seeds. They build small cup-shaped nests from lichen, plant and fungal materials, dry leaves, and spiderwebs, usually at the ends of branches under large leaves. Females lay clutches of one or two eggs. Both parents incubate the eggs and feed the chicks, sometimes assisted by older chicks from a previous brood.
December 31, 2022 - West African Wattle-eye (Platysteira hormophora) Found in western Africa from Sierra Leone east to Benin, these wattle-eyes live in rainforests, often near streams. They eat insects, usually foraging on thin branches, mostly from the understory to the midstory and often join mixed-species flocks. Little is known about their breeding behavior but closely related species build small cup-shaped nests from plant and fungal materials bound with spiderwebs where both parents incubate the eggs and care for the chicks.
