At number five we haveeeeee:

“Ultimate quiz show guy? Ultimate leave-a-fucking-mess-all-over-your-goddamn-desk-for-Kazutoshi-to-clean-up-guy?”

Always cold and witty Kamimura Kazutoshi was unfortunately killed by the hands of Okazaki Hanano the one time he wasn’t with Ken, so much for the buddy system. This was a case of being in the wrong place at the wrong time as explained by the almighty phantom thief (was that a persona reference?-) they said his death was entirely unnecessary! It was all a plot to get under community superhero Tsuno Manami’s skin. Personally I think if that was the motive in mind Wada should’ve died but what do I know I’m not writing a killing game. His death just seemed out of place among many others in this list and the needless gore described seriously could’ve been nixed from the story. But as long as Kamimura can forgive the narrative I guess I can too

Speaking of unnecessary deaths that segways us into number 4:

“Right I’ll tell them that while they’re bludgeoning my head in”

Sassy and stupendously stylish another chapter 3 victim makes his way onto our list. At first you don’t even realize Yaitabashi Sou had died as his killer Ikeda Daiki has perfected his look and somehow his voice? Maybe Wada’s ghost was in that file? Somehow it’s not the most unrealistic thing about this murder. Ikeda killed Sou by drugging him, tying him up to the shower head and removing any of his distinct features all with a dislocated arm and a bad back. And the twist is actually really cool!…for the first 5 seconds until you question the murders logic. With this one my suspension of disbelief snapped because while this is a world with a hopping and talking bunny that is the only supernatural thing about it. The time it would’ve taken Ikeda to do this all without running into Shishikura (who was totally in character this chapter too), the knowledge that his skin would melt off (never been outside by the by), and alter his appearance as need be? It’s just too much and with Yaitabashi himself I can’t see him being one to turn a blind eye to a drug because while he is actually blind he isn’t totally as Nishiguchi said. I seriously think that Yaitabashi was too smart for the coming chapters and he needed to go, or it was an excuse to torture another disabled character even more, who knows?

Onto number 3 which is a personal least favorite of mine

“WHY DO I ALWAYS LOSE?”/“God in heaven, I-I come before you as a sinner, broken and ashamed of the unforgivable act I have committed.”

Both Brawny with a heart of gold we have a double feature for our number three spot to match the chapter where that happens! Both from different games but laid with the same fate Maekawa Azusa and Hama Ran were executed in their respective trials because of a trope I like to call an accidental suicide. No this doesn’t mean their victims accidentally tripped on one of their murderers belongings and died, the accidental suicide trope is when the victim sets up a suicide for themselves that is triggered by their “murderer”. In Hama’s case he came from a place of concern as Watari wrote a note to him saying she wanted to meet with him and afterwards leaving a suicide note he rushed to find her, slamming the door and causing a battery to fall onto the gasoline setting the school ablaze not unlike the prom scene from Carrie. With Maekawa she made Shishikura drink a gnarly concoction they made in the kitchen with snowball sneaking in poison, honestly with the amount of poison deaths in blue Tamba would have a field day. I won’t go totally in depth on my feelings because I have a whole post related to it on my page (shameless plug who?) but I’ll recap. I think that these two chapters could have worked easily as standalone suicides because honestly it seems extremely out of character for both Watari and Shishikura to burn their best friends in this way. It seems that Von had an execution quota to fill and so they decided to kill off two innocent powerhouses that realistically should’ve lived.

Speaking of should’ve lived this death specifically had me seething number 2 isss:

“Sometimes I think I make bad decisions, I wish I didn’t do that…”

Someone who changed for the better OUTSIDE of the game but we love him development or not, Haraaaaada Keizo was the blackened for chapter two of pink. Harada is a special case because he didn’t actually kill our victim, Chiba Airi but was executed anyway. Harada was the Ultimate Zookeeper and was fostering a tiger cub, Sawa and she was seen as an extension of Harada according to the scientists. Harada had Sawa with him in the auditorium to watch Chiba climb the rope, she succeeded but because of the adrenaline gas this caused Sawa to follow her up the rope and attack her. So my really big problem with this one is that Harada didn’t directly kill her, he covered up the murder yes but that’s like saying Byakuya was an accomplice to killing Chihiro by messing with their body. Harada couldn’t stop Sawa and the acknowledgment of the two as one (Sawa as an extension of him) just doesn’t make a lick of sense to me. What makes the is worse is that the characters act like he killed Chiba too save for Hama after he dies. This reminds me of the chapter 5 trial in Trigger Happy Havoc where they pin the murder on Makoto but that actually had merit because that was a trap meant for Kyoko because she was close to figuring things out. This was just a poor call writing wise. For everyone’s shock that Harada pulled before the tiger it’s not a surprise he didn’t pull after.

Now onto our number one spot but first a few honorable mentions for those who didn’t deserve their deaths but didn’t feel justified enough to stick on the list:

HM #1: Nishiguchi Mutsuko, poor girl was killed just as she was starting to grow on me. Another case of wrong place wrong time.

HM #2: Ninomiya Youhei, a victim to bad writing because there’s no way one moment he’s cuddling Matthias and the next he’s poisoning him

And our number one spot for the most undeserved death in Tetro Danganronpa goes tooooo:

“Because I need you to love me, I love you so much it hurts”

Ever trusting and optimistic, Matthias De Clerque was my personal favorite out of the blue cast and was killed by Ninomiya Youhei. Now I do realize that I put his killer above him in the honorable mention spot but I think I can have my cake and eat it too in this case. Outside of Ogura the person Matthias was closest to was Youhei as when they were handcuffed together they hit it off. After the chapter they got closer romantically and looked out for one another even sending letters even though they were just down the hall. The two of them were attached at the hip during chapters three and four they were never apart and being lovey dovey to the point where footage was lost. The one issue in their relationship was the difference in how to continue their relationship. In Youhei’s student spotlight it’s shown that he has some form of commitment issues and rather his romantic pursuits stay physical which is reasonable! Matthias wants his relationship with Youhei to go beyond something more physical and border into emotional territory which is also reasonable! What isn’t reasonable though is cuddling someone and saying you care about them and then killing them an hour later. While not said by him directly, in Hanano’s student spotlight while pretending to be him they say that self preservation is very important to him. Now the idea that Youhei killed over insulin isn’t a bad idea, you could have him kill Ruka because she stole it last chapter and have HIM slowly kill her this time around. But what clashes DIRECTLY with his characterization is that he killed Matthias and then at the class trial he’s crying “I loved him, I loved him” YOU CANT HAVE BOTH. You can’t have his need to survive override his love for Matthias and then turn around and have him crying about love and how he shouldn’t have done it. Up till this point Matthias has shown nothing but care toward Ninomiya from the letters, threatening Ruka over her stealing his insulin, being with him as he was literally dying, I just realistically can’t see Ninomiya killing him. This also proves something Hirose said but not in the way you would think. Romantically I don’t believe Ninomiya took advantage of Matthias, he was his own person and the two of them admitted they cared about each other I think Hirose projected a little (no hate I love Hirose). However he took advantage of the fact that Matthias loved him to lure him out and kill him. More on Matthias now I feel like Chapter 2 set up a really good arc for him after Ogura died but they decided not to use it. Like he prayed to get out but Ogura couldn’t fulfill it so he had to get out now without any sort of help and pave his own way to get out. He was becoming more confident too, he mourned Ogura but carried her with him as he continued to live. They talk of him being unsure what to do when he leaves whether to stay in Japan or go back to Belgium which I think could’ve been explored in chapter 5 as they got closer to leaving and they could’ve delved into where he goes in survivorside snd who he decides to keep in touch with and if he visits. I find it really upsetting that the two characters implied to be victims of some sort of sex work die inside the game not really knowing anything outside of their terrible environment. It also kills me that Matthias never got to see his parents again :(. Maybe I feel really strongly because these are two of my favorite characters but I think that this chapter is riddled with poor writing choices and that Matthias and Ninomiya were victims in their own right this chapter.

And those are my top 5 picks for the most undeserved deaths in Tetro Danganronpa. I realize that Matthias’s spot was more about Youhei but I think that’s justified just because of the nature of the kill. This was a long one but thank you for reading and making it till the end!
