“Mottlefoot...?”
The throbbing in his shoulder that he had been so focused on moments earlier seemed to fade to a soft stinging as his eyes focused on the body a few feet ahead of him. He could only stand, frozen in place, as Eelbelly sprinted past him and skid to a halt next to the body of his fallen friend. He flinched as Eelbelly wailed.
“Mottlefoot, Mottlefoot!” the Riverclan deputy screeched as he desperately brushed his paws and his muzzle through Mottlefoot’s blood-soaked fur, searching for a pulse, a way to stop the bleeding, anything.
“He’s dead, Eelbelly,” Wasptalon heard from beside him. He hadn’t even noticed Sootface next to him, and he cast a sideways glance at the Shadowclan deputy. Upon hearing Sootface’s words, Eelbelly tensed as if he would turn at any moment and argue with him. Moments later, though, Wasptalon watched as Eelbelly’s demeanor faltered. Mottlefoot was dead. In that moment, Wasptalon noticed, Eelbelly looked more exhausted than he had ever seen him.
