Book Review: The Selection

I.LOVED.THIS.BOOK. I was tossing up reading it for about a year and I am so glad that I did. I loved the concept of this book, I loved the writing style and I loved the main characters. Initially when first noticing this novel I wondered how interesting can a story about marriage selection be? And boy let me be straight it was very interesting. In fact one of the best books I have read all year.
After China invaded America, Gregory Illea led the forces to fight back and in the process gained the power necessary to become king of the country. He implemented caste systems 1 through 8 where 1 was royalty and 8 was lowest of the lows. America is a 5, her and her family only just making it when she and 34 other girls are selected to compete for Prince Maxom’s heart. America is just an amazing character, she’s strong willed, spirited and not willing to change who she is simply because she is in the royal palace. I suppose you could say she keeps true to herself despite the luxury she is surrounded with.
Now America faces impossible choices, whether she has what it takes to be Princess and most importantly whether to give her heart to Maxom or Aspen. That’s right guys it’s a love triangle, and a damn good one at that. Aspen had America’s heart from the beginning but his pride got in the way and he broke her heart right before the selection. Enter one heartbroken America and one looking for love Prince and they hit it off. Literally, America knees him between the legs, you’ll see why.
Maxom. My darling Maxom, the poor boy is looking for love under the watchful eye of the country and it is clear from the beginning which of the 35 ladies he wants to be his wife. I love his personality it’s pleasant and kind with a dash of cheekiness and humour in every sentence. He’s everything you expect a Prince to be. Aspen. Originally a 6, he broke it off with America, believing he wasn’t good enough for her. But all of that was about to change. An unexpected twist saw America and Apsen’s paths meet again and reading this book is like watching a tennis match you’ll be looking from boy to boy wondering which one America will choose. Let me tell you I felt America’s confusion and I have no idea who she will pick in the end. I should also point out that both boys are ridiculously good looking and charming in their own right. I don’t know how America will choose.
I love the world that Cass constructed. It’s a modern day sovereignty and I loved every second reading about it. The characters are constructed so masterfully and the plot so well devised that I believe you will have a hard time putting this book down! My only complaint is that it was too short.
Do yourself a favour and read this book.
