YOUNG MEN was a teen adventure comic until late 1951, when the title was updated to YOUNG MEN ON THE BATTLEFIELD. This page is from issue 13, the second in the new format. Hank Chapman wrote it and Russ Heath drew it.
More from the same issue:
This one's unsigned but the art has been attributed to Al Hartley and the writer clearly remembered the ending of ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT. The poor slob who dies here was a farmer in civilian life and talked his buddies' ears off about the changes Spring would bring. No moral, just brutal irony. And in another story, a three-pager set in World War II, we're shown how a navy barrage saves an American infantryman from German tanks, and then we're shown how he dies trying to grab a booby-trapped Outer for a souvenir. These things aren't war comics, they're death comics, closer kin to the horror and crime stuff than to superheroes. But maybe seeing a difference between war comics and death comics is just a relic of Comics Code thinking.
