Studio ll - Block lll // ‘Phd in Fidelity’ - Blog 2
A lot has changed since my last blog post, first of all I’ve joined a team consisting of Jolie @sizzling-lamchop and Traz @dreamtimedesign and we have named our group “Phd in Fidelity” (Hence the title). Starting this block, I was a bit worried and I think this has been the most challenging project I‘ve done all year. I was stuck with the idea that I couldn’t/shouldn’t start prototyping any of my proposals until they were of good enough quality and I wasted a lot of time trying to refine them, then Ricardo explained that my thinking was wrong and I could prototype them even if they weren’t refined or crappy as I suggested mine were. He gave the analogy of making an ugly duckling (the proposal) into a beautiful swan through prototyping (as the proposal would refine itself every-time it went through the cycle of prototyping), but I thought to myself, what if that ugly duckling you have is just really munted and not even plastic surgery can help it, to an extent thats how bad my proposals were. But after a while I broke through, and it felt great. I realised that the vagueness of my 3 proposals were due to the fact that my scope was way too wide and decided to narrow it down to make my proposals more susceptible to change and a little bit less abstract and so I could hit some quality quick-scopes.
Joining up with both Traz and Jolie was an excellent idea, as we all could share diverse perspectives for all our individual proposals which led us to choosing what we decided were the ‘Best Three Proposals’, although we still have some backup proposals (And we got all those other goodies you receive when you join a team). We realised we were a bit late for the prototype generation stage so we decided to dedicate a whole day to planning and coming up with creative/fun/interactive/analytical prototypes for each of our chosen proposals (2 for each) - obviously doing so with the brief in mind trying to probe further questions for our ideas through the prototypes we end up doing. After coming up with the exciting prototype methods for our ideas which I probably would have not come up with if I was by myself, we have decided that we are going to begin tomorrow to test our first prototypes methods and hopefully start off to a successful cycle of ‘rapid prototyping’. I will document our progress tomorrow within my academic portfolio. I’d have to say joining a group has changed my whole outlook/experience on this block so far and has also helped me understand this project in a more clear manner and its made it 1000x more fun. :)
