Ming, Wanli, China, Blue and white 'dragon' dish, n.d. x
A.K.I.
Art by WANLI
The excavation of the Dingling Tomb (明定陵), mausoleum of Ming Emperor Wanli, in 1957.
The excavation seriously damaged the tomb and the artifacts within, causing an unstoplable oxidation of metal artifacts and the loss of colors on painted surfaces because of the contact with air, while the bodies of the Emperor and two women (probably concubines) were set on fire by Red Guards during the Cultural Revolution, in the late 1960s. However, the archeological investigation, showing these irreparable errors, led to great progress in chinese archeology. In the last photo, at the center, the pioneer of the subject, Xia Nai (夏鼐).
According to archeologist Wang Xiuling, the peculiar pose of Wanli's body was made to imitate the Big Dipper constellation, a fundamental constellation in traditional chinese astrology.
This photo is sometimes attributed online to the moments after the corpse was burnt by the Red Guards, but it was actually took 10 years earlier.
Old-school matchlock gun reproduction of the Ming dynasty item from Qingfan (慶藩). The original dates from the Wanli period. It is the first Ming matchlock gun in true sense.
Prototypes are on display at the Xuzhou Museum (徐州博物館).

Hi! I wan wondering if you have a translation for Wanli? What's the song is about?
Hello!
Translations (that I know of):
The moonlight before us is marvelous The ships on the sea are all invisible Yesterday’s regrets have been forgotten Today’s problems have all been forgotten
or
The moonlight in front is so intriguing, Even ships in the sea don't see it. Yesterday's regrets have been forgotten, So have the things from today
Or what google translate can come up with might also be somewhat accurate:
The moon ahead is amazing Can't see the ships at sea I forgot yesterday's regret I forgot about today
Oh Hyuk wrote the song with the intention of utilizing the form and feel of Chinese poetry (He mentioned learning about Tang dynasty poets Li Bai and Du Fu in school). Therefore, the song isn’t easy to translate.
The title Wanli translates to something like “Thousands of miles”.
The song’s point of view is the heart/mind of a general at sea.
Furthermore, Wanli was also written because Oh Hyuk thought it would be a good song to play at music festivals.
And fun fact: Wanli’s intro is inspired by images from Hong Kong movies. The marching sound effect was made with various samples and few recorded sources.
