Be Aware of this Phone Scam!
Last night I got a missed phone call and voice mail on my iPhone; the call was from number (473) 520-9780 in Grenada. Well -- I don't answer calls from unfamiliar numbers, and I sure as HELL don't know anyone in Grenada. The voice mail message was just a series of beeps, like a dropped call. I admit to being sort of curious, but if I'm not answering the call I'm certainly not calling back. So instead I plugged the number into my web browser to see if I could find out anything (my usual course of action with unknown callers). Turns out curiosity is at the root of the scam. Some people actually called back, only to get disturbing sex noises. Turns out the number is an unregulated (being as it's in Grenada) charge-by-the-minute sex line, and the one ring call is a ruse to get you to call them and incur outrageous charges. Seems this is a type of scam known as "wangiri", and it's at least ten years old ( http://www.economist.com/node/1367988 ). So, the moral of this story is not to call back unknown numbers -- look 'em up on the internet instead. The more you know...,
