the steps were slow as she wandered down the sidewalk, eyes taking in her surroundings. she knew exactly where she was, but it didnât look the same. everything she knew looked different, but she didnât understand -- not when she had only been there the day before. as far as she was concerned, nothing had happened to her. it was the day she went missing & she had been out shopping, but she carried no bags. odd, considering she remembered visiting her favorite stores. maybe she had already taken it home & only forgotten about it. likely, as itâs actually happened before. however, she had been running on little sleep, not suffering memory loss at the hands of an attacker.Â
romana led herself to the one spot she knew -- home. she found herself walking up the steps, hands patting her pockets. where had she left her keys? in fact, where exactly was her car? the shopping center was too far for her to walk & she didnât understand where she came from. so many aspects of the moment were confusing, but she wasnât mentally able to process it. quite possibly wouldnât be able to for some time. she just didnât know that.Â
she reached out for the handle, finding the door to be locked, causing her to groan. why did that sound so foreign to her? it almost didnât sound like her own voice, though she knew it was. maybe she was tired. that had to explain it. but what explained the various bruises littering her skin? where exactly had those come from? perhaps she had fallen again.Â
reaching up, she knocked against the wooden door, before rocking on her heels. besides the obvious signs of abuse & the changes a few years could make, she still looked the same as before. her clothes were the same as when she went missing & her eyes held that same softness behind them. however, once she knew the truth of what happened, all that would disappear.Â
âelijah,â she called, knocking again. âi forgot my key again.â
