These pictures are a few days into Romania. Cluj-Napoca is truly a beautiful city full of history and culture. The buildings and statues around the city reflect so much character, very different than back home. The people in this country have been very kind, since the moment I stepped into the plane headed to Bucharest. There have been however, moments where it’s been kind of uncomfortable while in town. I have seen people take a second look at me, sometimes even stare. Immediately my mind goes to my race and I wonder how are these people perceiving ‘me’ and what I stand for being here. I am a dark skin female among a crowd of Europeans. My roommate and I have exchanged conversations about this since she is also a woman of color. She, too has felt an unwanted attention. Another classmate also mentioned this as a concern. Speaking with a Cluj native, who is also our go-to guy, I found that there isn’t much diversity of Latinos, Asians and Blacks in Romania. I was told that the stares might be more of a shock rather than racism. Possibly. I’m not discouraging minorities to come to this trip but rather inform of the initial awkwardness when touring around town. See you next post!
