This gown was created by Walter Plunkett for 𝑳𝒊𝒕𝒕𝒍𝒆 𝑾𝒐𝒎𝒆𝒏 in 1949. Interestingly, this was the 𝒔𝒆𝒄𝒐𝒏𝒅 time that Plunkett had designed gowns for a production of 𝑳𝒊𝒕𝒕𝒍𝒆 𝑾𝒐𝒎𝒆𝒏, the first being in the 1933 adaptation, starring Katharine Hepburn as Jo March.   This costume was worn by June Allyson as Jo March in 𝑳𝒊𝒕𝒕𝒍𝒆 𝑾𝒐𝒎𝒆𝒏 and then recycled for 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑻𝒂𝒍𝒍 𝑻𝒂𝒓𝒈𝒆𝒕 in 1951, where it was worn by Ruby Dee as Rachel.   The costume eventually went on to be purchased by Debbie Reynolds. This beautifully detailed gown, designed by Walter Plunkett, was created for the 1956 film 𝑫𝒊𝒂𝒏𝒆, where it was worn by Lana Turner as Diane de Poitiers. The film was a big project for MGM, and publicity photos show there was a great emphasis on the costumes in the film, staging its star amongst Plunkett’s creations.   In 1966, it appeared in an episode of 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑴𝒂𝒏 𝒇𝒓𝒐𝒎 𝑼.𝑵.𝑪.𝑳.𝑬. called 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑹𝒐𝒖𝒏𝒅 𝑻𝒂𝒃𝒍𝒆 𝑨𝒇𝒇𝒂𝒊𝒓, where it was worn by Valora Noland as Grand Duchess Vicky.   The gown is owned by @thevintagecostumecollector You can learn more on his social media, or read his blog post about this fantastic gown on his website, which contains many more detailed photos of this incredible piece.   Tell us what you think of this beautiful costume at Bit.ly/TudEliz249  

This intriguing interpretation of Edwardian fashion was designed by Walter Plunkett for Martha Scott as Catherine Elizabeth Allan in the 1943 film 𝑰𝒏 𝑶𝒍𝒅 𝑶𝒌𝒍𝒂𝒉𝒐𝒎𝒂.   𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑶𝒍𝒅 𝑻𝒆𝒙𝒂𝒔 𝑻𝒓𝒂𝒊𝒍 utilized the piece the very next year when it was worn by Virginia Christine as Queenie Leone.   See more photos at https:// Bit.ly/VicEd343    

Interestingly, it looks like there must have been two copies of this dress…𝒌𝒊𝒏𝒅 𝒐𝒇.   In the 1949 adaptation of Louisa May Alcott’s 𝑳𝒊𝒕𝒕𝒍𝒆 𝑾𝒐𝒎𝒆𝒏, with costumes by Walter Plunkett (his second foray into costuming 𝑳𝒊𝒕𝒕𝒍𝒆 𝑾𝒐𝒎𝒆𝒏), he created two similar gowns. The first was worn by Mary Astor as Marmee, and the second is meant to look as if the first gown has been made over and adapted for wear by Margaret O’Brien as Beth.   Initially, I considered since it was the same fabric, perhaps Plunkett was implying two gowns were made from the same bolt of fabric, which would be in keeping with the Mach family’s ingenuity in times of hardship. However, the cut and design along the shoulders of the gown indicate it literally is meant to 𝒂𝒑𝒑𝒆𝒂𝒓 to be the same exact dress.   However, for filming purposes, two separate dresses were made, because the one worn by Mary Astor went on to be used in two additional productions over the years.   In 1955, it was worn by Jocelyn Brando as Corinne Michaels in 𝑻𝒆𝒏 𝑾𝒂𝒏𝒕𝒆𝒅 𝑴𝒆𝒏 with an adjusted waistband.

Olivia de Havilland first wore this knitted wool coat as Melanie Hamilton in the 1939 film 𝑮𝒐𝒏𝒆 𝒘𝒊𝒕𝒉 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑾𝒊𝒏𝒅.   In 1970 it was worn again by Kelly Jean Peters as Olga Crabb in 𝑳𝒊𝒕𝒕𝒍𝒆 𝑩𝒊𝒈 𝑴𝒂𝒏.   Walter Plunkett designed the piece, and the fact that it was pulled from stock for use over thirty years after it was originally created is a testament to how well it was made.   The costume ultimately went up for auction and was sold. An uncredited Walter Plunkett almost certainly designed this lovely wedding gown, which was seen twice in 1933.   Marian Nixon was first seen in the gown as Glory Franklyn in 𝑪𝒉𝒂𝒏𝒄𝒆 𝒂𝒕 𝑯𝒆𝒂𝒗𝒆𝒏, but it was spotted a few months later on Ginger Rogers as Honey Hale in a promotional photo for 𝑭𝒍𝒚𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝑫𝒐𝒘𝒏 𝒕𝒐 𝑹𝒊𝒐, though the gown did not appear in the film itself.   Find more reused costumes by Walter Plunkett at Bit.ly/ReusedPlunkett
