taking my brother in law through YJ, the guy blasted through the entire first season and nine eps of the second in like a day. not that i ever need an excuse to draw these two, but rewatching the series always helps
it's the way i was very emo drawing this LEL i realized ive never drawn what i dubbed the speedshrine fam together before. wally and lei do end up having a child together named ken who becomes a speedster like his father-- except he goes by raijin.
a. itâs funnier when you know wally and artemis still dated in this verse so he was walking around with the notion of artemis being able to whip out a hair dryer on command and artemis just didnât know
b. lei didnât bother asking why he asked
c. either lei really totes around a hair dryer in her purse or sheâs just fucking with him
d. artemis would like to point out lei hardly counts as human

Perching her head on interlaced fingers, Lei watched Wally line his knife across the top of his sandwich.
He kept making microscopic adjustments to the blade, his tongue poking out of the corner of his mouth from the effort. One millimeter left, two right. Finally after a few more rounds of the kitchen hokey-pokey, Lei said, âOh my God, Wally. Cut it.â
âAlmooostâŚâ Wally kept his eyes still fixed on his sandwich, but didnât move any faster than he had been.
Lei gestured vaguely at the set up strewn over the kitchen counterâ half a fridgeâs worth of ingredients she was pretty sure werenât meant to be together. âYou couldâve been done ages ago.â
âWeâre not going anywhere,â Wally said, finally sawing through the first layer of his triple decker. âAnd I happen to like the process.â
âWell.â Lei snipped without any real fire, âLike the process faster.â
He laughed and sucked a bit of mustard off his thumb, his sandwich now cut perfectly down the middle. âThereâs merit in taking things slow, yâknow, have a little respect for the art.â
âItâs three meats on rye.â
âItâs the human experience.â Wally said with a gleam in his eye.
âOh-kay.â She flicked a strand of hair over her shoulder, but she didnât hide the lacing laughter in her tone.
âOur ancestors have been stacking stuff between baked pieces of grain since the dawn of civilization.â He said, tapping the counter in emphasis, âEvery sandwich is our connection to our forebearers. Our history. OurâŚâ
Wally looked out somewhere beyond Leiâs head, but judging by his faltering expression heâd exhausted his muse.
âEssence of life.â Lei suggested.
âEssence of life.â Wally agreed as he wrapped a half of his sandwich in a plastic sheetâ taking care of folding it neatlyâ before handing it to her.
âIâm out of gold leaf.â He said when she hesitated, âSorry, Miss Iâve-Got-A-Personal-
Michelin-Star-Chef.â
Lei rolled her eyes and snatched it from his hand, spinning the seat of her chair as to turn her back on him. She shot a smile over her shoulder, âItâs two personal Michelin chefs and their respective crews, thank you.â
âOh, gee. My bad.â He said around a mouthful.
Lei studied her half of the sandwich. It didnât look half-bad. Sandwiches weren't her go-to food the way it was for Wallyâ who swore up and down were acceptable for all three meals of the dayâ but sheâd been forced to miss lunch earlier.
That was the excuse she gave herself when she took a sniff, quickly followed by a bite. She hummed appreciatively, turning back around to face Wally.
âIâll eat it if you donât want it.â He said, reaching out for it, only for his response to be a swift slap of his hand. âOw?â Wally clamped his sandwich between his teeth, rubbing at the sting.
âDonât be dramatic.â Lei said quickly, making sure she took another extra big bite. She was hungrier than she thought sheâd been and she didnât like how Wally thought she was too good for ânormalâ food.
He was right, of course, but she didnât like him thinking she wouldnât take something he gave her.
And, honestly, it wasnât a bad sandwich. A little heavy-handed on the mustard and she wasnât a fan of the brown flecks on the lettuce. Cheddar wasnât her favorite cheese. But all in all, she could almost say she liked it.
âAlright, West.â She said, âMaybe you have something there.â
He snorted. By some miracle âlikely because he still hadnât found a way to safely dislocate his jawâ Wally hadnât stuffed his half into his mouth. âJimmy Johnâs would go to war with Subway for me.â
âI meant your little âhuman connectionâ thing.â Lei peeled away more of the plastic from her sandwich, surprised sheâd already eaten half way through it. âI canât remember the last time someone made a sandwich for me for the sake of it. Itâs nice.â
Wally swallowed with a little more effort than Lei was comfortable with. He lifted up his remaining bite in the air, it took Lei a minute to realize he was proposing a toast, âMay our bread be the foundation of a greater WeâŚBologna, an extension of our heartstringsâŚand the weird, kinda green thing that was chillinâ in the back of the pantry our bond that lives through time.â
Lei closed her eyes, choosing to ignore that little tidbit. She lifted her own remaining piece of dinner. It wasnât much smaller than Wallyâs. âHallelu.â
They tapped their bites and ate.
â
itâs the way iâve had this sketch for over a year. and it let it be known lei expects wally to make her sandwiches from then on.
