The echo of the judgeâs gavel rang in his ears with every jolt of the shuttle over yet another pothole. The dull thud, thud, thud undulating, cresting over his head, the sound expanding in his ears until theyâre blocked up against the chatter of the other passengers around him. The rusted metal prison carrying them down this poorly kept dirt road had held them captive for several hours now. Cooke County was long behind them as they trundled south down I-35, out to the middle of nowhere, to their new âhomeâ.
All the guys around him were chattering away, excited about the transfer, running their mouths about how this place was gonna be way better than that shithole institution they were leaving behind, but Jensen didnât trust to hope.
Heâd hoped his parents would come to his hearing. Heâd hoped they would have come to take him home. Heâd hoped they might have decided they gave a damn after not seeing him for three years. He wasnât gonna hope anymore. There wasnât any reason Quarter Creek Ranch would be better than Gainesville State School had been. Juvie was juvie, as far as Jensen was concerned, this new one just came with horses. Well, that was a little better, Jensen admitted to himself, the bitter taste of the dust settling through the open windows and onto his tongue spurring on his bitter thoughts.
Jared watched from the barn door as the rickety shuttle sputtered to a halt in the yard, kicking up dirt in swirling clouds. The door wrenched open with a raking creak of un-oiled metal and a stream of boys filed out of the dust; an army of clones in thin white t-shirts and rough hewn jeans, matching denim shirts, some slung over their shoulders, some tied around waists, some sticking out of the front pockets of their identical, black canvas backpacks, state issued work boots dragging over the earth. Most of their expressions were identical too, excitement shining as luridly as the sweat on their brows after the stuffy shuttle ride down a Texas highway.
The last boy to file off the bus looked like heâd swallowed the diesel fuel the shuttle runs on. Jared managed to choke down his laugh but he couldnât keep the smirk off his face. Thereâs always one who came into the program whoâd already decided that it would be the worst experience of their life. As long as the kid didnât cause any trouble for the others, or the horses, Jared didnât mind.
The officer that had driven the shuttle down from Gainesville waddled off the bus behind the cargo of boys, stretching his limbs out, stiff from the long drive.
âHowdy!â he raised his hand in greeting, joviality at odds with what Jared expected from a juvenile prison guard. He raised his hat briefly in a return greeting, pushing off the weathered wood of the barn door heâd been leaning on and swaggering forwards into the yard to meet his new ranch hands.
Theyâre a pretty rowdy bunch â Jared expected that. Open air thatâs not stunted by ten foot chain link fences would be a refreshing change of pace for anyone who had been shut away in a state facility for as long as these boys had been. Theyâre all jostling together in a bundle, knocking shoulders and kicking shins as the officer herded them toward Jared. The sullen one hung at the back of the throng, a deep scowl on his full, pink lips. The boyâs tongue darted out to rehydrate them in the dry heat, and Jared wanted to kick himself just for noticing that this eighteen year old kid was attractive â even if he was attractive as hell.
Jared wasnât that kind of guy.
âAlright!â Jared shouted and clapped his hands to get their attention, his voice booming out of his chest a little lower than its standard pitch, establishing his authority out of the gate. âMy nameâs Jared, Iâm the owner of Quarter Creek Ranch, where yâall have elected to spend your rehabilitation.â
The officer finally made it to the front of the crowd and handed over a clipboard of names, which Jared took with a grateful smile.
âWeâre gonna do a roll call twice a day,â he waved the clipboard at the group eyeing him suspiciously, âuntil I get to know all your names, and until I feel like I can trust you not to run off.â
Thereâs a discontented groan from the collective, which Jared was expecting, but he doesnât let it stop his speech.
âThis is not our first time running this program, and you will not be the first group to have a couple of runners.â Jaredâs eyes couldnât help but flick accusingly towards the disgruntled boy at the back. âLet me tell you, weâre about five miles of nothing from anywhere that even resembles a real road and almost no one drives by this way, so I guarantee me and my boys will find you before you find any way outta here.â Jared looked back at the kid again, but his expression hadnât changed.
âYouâre all in rooms of four up at the house,â Jared jerked his thumb behind him toward the sandy sided farmhouse with the big wrap-around porch, âand each room of four has their own bathroom. Iâm gonna call off your names, then yâall can go inside and get cleaned up, then I expect yâall downstairs again at six-thirty for dinner.â
There were general rumbles of hushed chatter at the prospect of a shower and food and Jared cleared his throat again so he didnât have to talk over them.
âAckles!â he started at the top of the list, and heard a shuffle as âAcklesâ moved to the front of the crowd. Jared looked up to see the boy heâd been having trouble keeping his eyes off of. He looked back down at his list. Jensen. No chance heâd be forgetting this kidâs name.
âAnderson!â A lanky, greasy looking teen stepped forward and stood next to Jensen.
âBaxter!â A broad kid with a severe buzz cut that showed off the tattoo on his scalp joined the line.
âCameron!â Jared finished, watching the last boy join his new roommates. âOkay yâall, room one, up you get,â he pointed them towards the house and they trudged off, Jensen glancing back at Jared as he passed, his reliably stoic expression faltering almost imperceptibly before the mask was back up and he looked away again, following his new roommates.
Jared watched the group until Jensen was out of sight, filing up the porch behind the others. The shift heâd seen in those eyes when theyâd met his had him worried. It had been so brief, so well controlled, that he couldnât interpret whatever starburst of emotion had flashed through that cold, deep green. It had sent an uncomfortable prickle down his spine, and settled low in his gut. Heâd be keeping a close eye on Ackles, thatâs for sure.
Jensen kicked his boots off unceremoniously when he and the others reached their new room. One landed under the single bed to the right of the door, and he took it as a sign that that space would be his now. He nudged his other boot under the bed to join the first and dropped onto the mattress with a shuddering creak; he couldnât tell if it was coming from the bed frame or his bones.
âI got first shower!â Anderson didnât even bother claiming a bed before he rushed past them all into the small en suite at the back of the room, heavy wooden partition sliding closed behind him with a thunk. No one argued with him â Anderson stunk â poor guy always looked like heâd taken a swim in the runoff from a fry up joint.
Baxter looked around the space measuredly before stomping over to the bed next to Jensenâs, and only then did Cameron step forward and pick one out for himself. Cameron had kept close to Baxter ever since heâd been brought into the system. He was a weedy guy, with a gap in his teeth the width of the Mississippi and a lisp that made him sound like heâd been out picking cotton all day and inhaled more of the product than heâd harvested. Kids like him didnât do well in juvie without someone higher up the food chain watching their back.
Leslie Baxter scared the shit out of most of the residents from Gainesville, even made one of the corrections officers cry once, or so the rumour went. The good thing about that: having him as a roommate meant the other boys werenât much likely to mess with the rest of them.
Secretly, Jensen would bet all the money he didnât have that there was another reason Baxter and Cameron stuck so close together, but if you went around calling guys named Leslie and Taylor a couple in a boys correctional facility in North Texas ⌠well, you just didnât do that. At least, Jensen would never do that â could never do that â to somebody.
Anderson wandered out of the shower a couple minutes later, dingy white towel tucked high and tight around his waist, hiding the abs Jensen knew he didnât have. Heâd never been one for exercise or manual labour, Anderson. He preferred lounging around the yard theyâd been let out in twice a day, sneaking cigarettes as soon as he was old enough to get in with the senior crowd at the facility.
Jensen pulled himself off his bed, legs swinging around to the side closer to the shower, and toed off his socks. He could see the floor of the small bathroom shining with water and soap suds, curls of steam rising off the tiles as the hot water met the slightly cooler draft from the air conditioned bedroom. Thank god for the small mercies that it was actually down as inhumane to lock them up in Texas without at least a fan or something to move the air around. The little window unit sat humming away between Jensen and Baxterâs beds.
Cameron started to get up from his bed at the same time as Jensen did and tried to slip into the bathroom ahead of him, but Jensenâs long legs caught up to him quick, and he yanked Cameron back by the scruff of his shirt.
âNot a chance, short stuff,â Jensen grunted, hauling him back onto his bed. Cameron looked to Baxter, asking for permission to turn this into a tussle, but Baxter just shook his head and rolled his eyes.
âItâs a shower, dude,â he scoffed. âAcklesâll be two minutes, you know the guy donât bother to wash his junk.â
The occupants of the room all laughed, and Jensen rolled his eyes, but nodded to Baxter in acknowledgement that he hadnât okayâd anyone taking a swing at him. They both knew it was just for appearances. Jensen didnât have any reason to be grateful, he could have squashed Cameron like a cowpat, easy, and Baxter knew it. He was saving Cameron the embarrassment, not sparing Jensen a beating.
Most of the crew that had come down to the Ranch for their rehab hadnât been inside as long as Jensen. Baxter was one of the few whoâd arrived in the same crop of delinquents theyâd shipped out from Dallas five years ago. Baxterâd done a lot of his terrorizing once heâd been sanctioned, Jensen had done his before. Itâs what landed him there, and the rumours that landed with him were enough to keep guys off his case â even guys like Baxter. No one was quite sure if it was true or not, but the story was some twink was laid up in Dallas County Hospital with a ventilator and no sign of brain function thanks to him.
Jensen never cared to comment.
True to reputation, he was only in the shower a couple minutes; scrubbing the dust clouds off his skin and out of his scalp, and he did drag the bar of soap down under his balls and up the crack of his ass after he noticed there was only one. A special present for Cameron, who was sure to jump in next.
Jared surveyed the canteen and its new bundle of occupants apprehensively. Taking in a crowd of sixteen to nineteen year old juveniles was a risky venture heâd inherited from his Daddy. They hadnât had a new crop since a few years ago when his father had had that fall and gone into the old folks home; the ranch had been too big and too stairs-based to make it worth trying to outfit the whole operation as handicapable.
When Jared moved back home to look after the place, he wasnât ready to jump into running a youth program on top of the actual ranching business so theyâd had to take a pause while he got his bearings. His Daddy died last year, but Jaredâs dying promise to him was that heâd get The QCR Juvenile Rehabilitation program back up and running. Looking around at the room full of young, cautious faces, Jared prayed this would all be worth it.
As they settled down on their benches, plates brimming with beans, rice, and their slabs of grilled chicken, the boys started to drop their masks and stopped looking around so suspiciously. Cool air and warm, full bellies had a way of helping teens drop their guard a little bit.
Jared started to see the cliques that had migrated with them from the detention center. The boys werenât sitting with their roommates, except in a couple select cases. He couldnât help his eyes wandering toward the four boys heâd put in the first room. The big one and the little one, Baxter and Cameron he thought, were sat together. The stringy one that he couldnât remember the name of was off with another group across the room. It took another minute for him to find the one he was looking for, Jensen, sat at the back table, in the corner farthest from Jared.
Ackles wasnât sitting alone exactly, there were other kids on either side of him, but he wasnât speaking to any of them. He wasnât participating. It was like he was off in his own head, like he didnât need the social interaction the others craved.
Jared thought back to what heâd been told in his course about antisocial behaviour in juvenile delinquents. Reluctance to interact with their peers is often a precursor to further issues with aggression when the delinquent is released back into civil society, his head quoted the handbook back at him. Now vaguely concerned by what he observed of Ackles thus far, Jared sought him out again and felt his heart drop into his stomach.
Jensen wasnât in the seat heâd been in just seconds before.
Panicking, hopefully invisibly, Jaredâs eyes swept the room, looking for that sandy brown hair shot through with sun or the freckled face or the striking green eyes, any feature he could remember. He finally hit upon Ackles, passing behind a group of boys that had just stood up with their empty plates and in his breath of relief it struck him; that had been a strange set of traits for his brain to pick out about one of his juvenile detainees. So far he mentally identified most of them as: âthe one with the eagle tattooâ, âthe one that needed a haircutâ, âthe one that looked like he could bench press 200 poundsâ. Ackles, despite his stern gaze and aloof attitude and altogether unnerving presence, had somehow found himself with the label of âthe incredibly fuckable oneâ.
Jared flinched at his own thoughts, ashamed that he could even be attracted to someone in his care like these boys were, someone half his age. Heart sinking, Jared recognised that heâd already crossed a line without realising what his motivations were; he knew Ackles was half his age because after heâd done the roll call in the yard heâd gone inside and pulled out the file on âAckles, Jensenâ to check him out. At the time heâd told himself he needed to read up on the kid because heâd already presented as a concern but the reality of the situation couldnât be avoided now he recognised the path his thoughts had turned down. Jared was loath to admit that maybe it was men like him that gave the gay community a bad reputation. Admiring Jensen, even from afar, had to be treading the line of predation, didnât it?
A crash and a cacophony of shouts pulled Jared from his contemplation of his young charge. In his preoccupation, Jared hadnât noticed Jensenâs smallest roommate, Cameron, stand up from his bench and make his way down towards Jaredâs end of the room. He hadnât seen what happened, but Cameron was now squaring up to one of the other guys â one of the ones that looked like they could bench press him, easy.
Jensen and Baxter looked up towards the commotion and Jared saw both roll their eyes. Apparently this wasnât unusual. The sound of an actual punch being thrown broke Jared out of his second reverie and spurred him towards the ring that had begun to form around the spectacle. The fighters were pretty well walled in, and Jared had trouble breaking through. Baxter appeared in his line of sight amidst jeers from the crowd, easily pushing in and stepping in front of Cameron to defend him from the other boy.
âYour little butt buddy started it,â he growled in Baxterâs face, not backing down.
âYeah, and Iâm finishing it!â Jared shouted, finally pushing through and inserting himself in between them. âThatâs my first warning for all three of you,â Jared pointed sternly at Baxter, Cameron, and Sanchez (he finally remembered the name of the other kid). âWeâre not playing baseball here either fellas. Any of yâall start something again youâre going back North, no third strike necessary. Got it?â
âYes, sir,â they all grumbled reluctantly, Cameron and Sanchez still seething.
âEveryone back to your rooms now, get!â Jared ushered them towards the exit to the canteen, watching the crowd mosey out, chattering away. It was like the fight had broken some kind of tension and helped them all relax. Maybe now it felt more like home, what they were used to before. Jared looked around helplessly at the smiles, despairing a little inside. That facility in Gainesville must have been a hell of a place.
Jared was about to exit himself and lock the door behind him when he spotted Jensen still sat quietly in the corner, leaning back off the bench to rest against the wall behind him and mindlessly flicking through the pocket Bible they were required to provide in each room by the state. Being alone in the room with him made something queasy stir in Jaredâs stomach, and he was surprised at the edge in his own voice when he spoke.
âAckles,â he barked roughly, sound coming out scratchy and low. The boy flicked his eyes up from the Bible in his hands to look at Jared, bright green peeking through unfairly pretty eyelashes. âYou uh, you canât stay here. Back to your room,â Jared jerked a thumb down the hall in the direction all his fellow residents had just gone.
Jensen got up without speaking, tucking the Bible into the back of his jeans and moseying forward â towards Jared rather than the door. He stopped just short of him, looking up the couple of inches Jared had on him. For a moment, too long really, Jensen just stared at Jared, implacable. Jared only stared back helplessly.
âYessir,â Jensen finally spoke, voice heavy with Texas and sarcasm, tilting an imaginary cowboy hat in deference to Jared before he brushed past him and walked down the hall to the dormitories without a backward glance.
The work Jensen is rotated through on the ranch gets duller by the day. He didnât know how the head honcho was selecting who got which assignments, and it was probably random, but Jensen felt like he was being personally singled out with the worst jobs there were.
Anderson had been on the same duties in the stables since day one. He and a few others were learning how to groom the horses from some of the permanent, non-delinquent hands they had on staff. Cameron and Baxter had somehow wound up in the same group, despite that being one of the worst ideas ever, because they never got anything done when they were together. Or at least never got it done well. They had been out in some of the back fields mending fences and burning down some of the old grass. And what guy doesnât want to mess around with fire all day and then hit some stuff? That sounded like a great way to spend the day if you asked Jensen.
But he had been stuck inside the whole frigginâ time heâd been on this goddamn ranch; right under the nose of the top gun himself. Jared wouldnât. Leave him. Alone. Everywhere he went the guy was watching him. He tried to do it surreptitiously, but Jensen had spent the past five years watching his own back in juvie; he knew how it felt when someone had their eyes on him.
Today, Jensen was stuck in the kitchen on prep duty with Rocco and DJ, another pair that happened to get stationed with their buddies. Jensen swore he was the only one who kept winding up on his own. Though, he reflected on his dissatisfaction, maybe that was because he didnât really have any friends among this group of guys in the first place.
He wondered idly, as he tore lettuce into chunks (they werenât allowed knives), why it seemed to bother him so much more here than it had back in Gainesville. Maybe it was because they were out, but not really out. The ranch felt a lot closer to the real world, so Jensen had subconsciously expected to start plugging in again like he had the last time heâd been free. Expected it to feel more like highschool had, maybe, back when heâd actually had friends. When heâd had a boyfriend.
But it was useless thinking like that, Jensen realized. This place was just another kind of prison. Albeit â Jared walked through the kitchen door right on cue â one with much better eye candy than juvie had had. As irritating as it was to have him looking over his shoulder all the frigginâ time, Jensen could still admit that the owner of Quarter Creek Ranch was smokinâ hot. Like, hotter than Texas at the height of summer, hot.
Yesterday, Jensen had seen Jared ride into the stables while heâd been mucking out stalls â the closest heâd gotten to the horses the whole time theyâd been here â and he damn near had heart palpitations. The sight of that man with his thighs spread wide across the animalâs back and sweaty from the baking sun was something else. Jensen had actually choked on his own breath for a moment when heâd caught sight of the way the leather reins were tangled in Jaredâs long, rough fingers. He couldnât tell which he wanted more: the leather straps wrapping around his neck, or Jaredâs hands.
Juvie had given him some kinks; sue him. Heâd had to make do with the skin mags he could pinch from the guards and none of them were particularly his thing, so heâd settled for imagination, and heâd had a ready memory of the feel of handcuffs sinking into his flesh.
Jensen was distracted now by Jaredâs fingers flying in front of his face, and he jumped back reflexively before he registered what he was doing. He hadnât been in any danger, he realized. Jared was just reaching for a chunk of lettuce from the growing pile Jensen had in front of him. The man popped the piece into his waiting mouth, stubbled chin working methodically as he chewed, Adam's apple bobbing as the vegetable made its way down his throat.
Jensen just stood there in bristly silence as Jared stared him down for a moment, simultaneously reaching for a second piece of lettuce. What the hell was his deal? Jensen wondered.
âYou got something you wanna say there, Ackles?â Jared raised an eyebrow and stole another piece of lettuce.
Jensen felt his hands ball into fists at his side. It wasnât like Jared was doing anything particularly malicious, or even that annoying, except that Jensen could tell he was doing it to mess with him, to see if there was some way to get him riled up and push him into lashing out. What the fuck was this guyâs problem?
âDo you like the lettuce, sir?â Jensen asked dryly, because he didnât know what the fuck else to say, but he sure as hell knew he wasnât going to rise to this bait.
âGood work on the tearing,â Jared smirked and moved on to inspect Rocco and DJâs work, but not before Jensen caught a glimpse of something cagey behind the dark of his eyes. He was confused for a moment, he could have sworn Jared had lighter eyes than that â all blue and hazel and gray warped together â but then he realized it must have been Jaredâs pupils, dilated far beyond reason for someone who was hanging out in a kitchen stealing bites of poorly prepared raw vegetables.
âGood work over here too, guys,â Jared nodded approvingly, looking over the rest of the food prep. âGo on and wash up, then head outside and help JosĂŠ unload the feed bags for the horses.â
âYou got it boss,â DJ gave Jared an insincere salute and shot out the door with Rocco close on his heels. Jensen turned to trudge after them when a thick forearm blocked his path.
âNot you, Ackles.â Jaredâs expression as he looked down at him was unreadable. Jensen met his stare evenly, trying not to let his irritation become visible.
âSomething else you need, sir?â he forced himself to ask politely.
âSince you did such a good job with the lettuce, weâre gonna move you on to bigger and better things.â Jared spun around, and Jensen watched him suspiciously as moved back to the kitchen counter. Using a key he had on a loop of his belt, Jared unlocked a drawer and pulled out a, clearly very dull, knife. Jensenâs brow shot up in surprise.
âYou trust me with that?â
Jared looked back at him quizzically, dropping a bag of potatoes on the counter next to where heâd set the knife.
âYou gonna give me a reason not to?â Jaredâs brow quirked up to match Jensenâs.
Jensen didnât answer the question. He stomped up to the kitchen counter and picked up the knife, grabbing a potato in the other hand.
âWhat shape am I cutting these into?â Jensenâs voice was monotone, unemotional. He wasnât going to be grateful to Jared for the extra work when the other boys got a break, but he wasnât going to give him a reason to regret this decision to take a chance with him either.
âWhat shape am I cutting these into, sir,â Jared corrected, and though Jensen couldnât see him he could hear the cocky smirk the man was wearing, loud and clear.
âYessir, sorry sir,â Jensen spoke through clenched teeth. He refused to turn around to see the glee that he was sure must be on Jaredâs face.
âBetter,â Jared confirms. âLong and thick, Ackles.â
Jensen spluttered, choking on thin air. Heâd been wondering just a second ago if Jaredâs cock was as big as his attitude; how had he known what Jensen had been thinking?
âIâm sorry sir?â Jensenâs cheeks were flaming red, he couldnât turn to look at Jared to see if the manâs expression gave anything away.
âThe potatoes, Ackles,â Jared answered evenly, and Jensen blushed even deeper.
âOh, uh, right. Yessir.â Fuck, he hated Jared.

Summary: You play Cordell Walkerâs daughter on the new show Walker. Jared takes you under his wing. What happens when a winter storm hits all of Texas.
Warnings: Mentions of a rough upbringing, Texas winter storm, power outage, water problems, some angst, scary weather, fluff, protective Jared, maybe a cuss word somewhere
A/N: As a Texan, this past week has been scary. I have been extremely blessed to not have the problems that a lot are. I was lucky and did not lose power and did not have any pipes burst. This idea came to me after seeing that Jared and Gen were helping others while dealing with their own problems at their house.Â

Winter weather will be hitting Texas this weekend. You can expect lots of snow and ice. It is best to prepare for possible power outages and water being turned off. That is worst case scenario, but be prepared as Sunday will be a cold one.
You panicked. Growing up in North Texas you never had to deal with severe winter weather. You were used to dealing with tornados. But the way they were talking on the news, this weekend was going to be bad.
Thankfully you had the day off and were able to go to the store. You grabbed a case of water and food that you could prepare and food that didnât have to be cooked to eat. You were still getting used to the adult life as an 18 year old, but since you had been taking care of yourself the last few years, you learned a thing or two in the kitchen. You made sure to grab some snacks as well since they didnât have to be cooked or stored in the fridge either.
As you pulled up to your apartment building, you got a call from the lead and producer of the show you were on. You still werenât sure how you managed to land the role of Stella in the new show Walker, but you were grateful. You put the car in park and grabbed your phone.
âHey Jare.â You said. Jared was the older brother you always wanted, even though he plays your dad and he has moments where he acts like your dad. You didnât have a great life growing up and to have a male figure in your life to help you in anyway, made you happy. Same thing with Gen.
âHey Y/N/N. Howâre you doing?â He asked.
âIâm doing good. Just got back from the store. Am I needed on set?â You asked in a panic thinking you missed something.
âNo, no youâre not needed. Just wanted to call and tell you we are not filming Monday or Tuesday next week. And depending on the weather and roads, we may cancel Wednesday as well.â He informed you.
âOh. Is it because of the storm?â You asked.
âYeah. We arenât sure how bad itâll be, but we are hoping we are just being over cautious.â He said. âYou said you went to the store?â
âYeah. I just wanted to get somethingâs so I wonât have to get out. And I got some stuff. I wonât need to cook in case we lose power. Also filled up with gas in case I lose heat and need to warm up some.â You told him.
âCome stay with us. We have plenty of room and we have a fireplace. We just restocked our firewood supply. I donât want to be worrying about you all weekend.â He said.
âIâll be okay. Really. Thank you for the offer though.â You said nicely. You really did mean it. You were used to taking care of yourself that when people did want to help you, you appreciated them.
âWell. I have my truck if I need to come get you. If you change your mind, come over. The kids would love to see you.â He said. You heard Gen agree with him in the background. âAnd Gen would too.â
âWell after the storm, Iâll come over for dinner to see everyone. And Iâll even come another night to babysit so you and Gen can go on a date.â You said with a laugh once you heard Gen immediately laugh.
âGen says you donât have to, but I will take you up on both offers.â Jared told you. âOkay. Well stay in touch. They say itâll start sometime tomorrow night.â
âYâall stay safe and stay in touch too.â You said. âBye Jare.â
âBye Y/N/N.â He said before hanging up. You put your phone back into your pocket before lugging all of the groceries into your apartment. You put everything away before going to change out of your winter clothes.
After changing into some PJs to be comfortable. You decided to meal prep some so you wouldnât have to worry about it later. And if the weather isnât as bad as they think itâll be, you can just eat them throughout the week.
Sunday morning, you woke up and looked outside. All you could see was white fluffiness. You smiled as the world looked at peace. You loved snow. You always thought it brought beauty to the world.
When you walked back to your phone where it laid on its charger, you saw a couple of texts from Jared and Gen. Both had sent you photos of Tom, Shep, and Odette playing the in the snow. Then you saw Jaredâs text about possible rolling power outages.
You picked up the phone and called Jared and before he could even say hello, you asked, âWhat does that mean? Your text... I donât understand it.â
âIt means theyâll shut the power off for an hour to three hours to preserve energy.â Jared said.
âOh.â You said.
âYeah, so if the power goes out, donât worry, it should come back on.â He reassured you.
âOkay. Thank you for letting me know.â You replied.
âOf course. How are you doing anyways?â He asked.
âGood. Just woke up. Felt good to sleep in. Iâm probably about to start warming up my lunch.â You informed him. âHow are yâall handling it over there? I saw the pics you and Gen sent. The kids look like theyâre having a blast.â
âWeâre doing good. The kids are definitely loving the snow. I did have to help Gen gather the chickens this morning which wasnât fun.â He said with a laugh.
âOh gosh. Yeah chasing chickens isnât fun. Are they okay? I didnât even think about yâallâs animals?â
âTheyâre all in the barn with heat lamps. Thankfully the barn is powered by solar so we donât have to worry too much if the power goes out since we have a lot of energy stored up.â He said.
âGood thatâs good. Well Iâll let you get back to doing whatever you were doing. Thanks again for letting me know.â
âAnytime. If you need something, holler. Okay?â He asked.
âI will. Bye.â You said. You heard his farewell as you went to hang up the phone. After preheating the oven, you took the lasagna and boxed garlic bread out of the freezer. You figured, while the power was still on, you could cook the one meal you prepped that couldnât be eaten cold until you cooked it and it was leftovers.
An hour later, you sat at the counter charging your phone and iPad while you ate. When you went to take another bite, the power cut off.
âGreat.â You whispered. You knew it was only going to be for a few hours, but you were a little aggravated by the inconvenience. You stood up and went and put on thicker sweatpants and your socks. When you made it back to your phone to text Jared that your power went out, you saw you barely had any service. That concerned you in case you needed to make a call for an emergency.
Power just went out. Hopefully yâall didnât lose power. Iâll let you know when itâs back on. Sent 1:23 pm
You continued to eat as you awaited a response. Shrugging when you finished your meal and put the dirty dish in the sink, you moved to the living room to read a book you started the night before.
Hours later, you still had no power and you still hadnât heard from Jared or Gen. You had checked social media, but neither had posted anything. You decided to scroll through Twitter and saw the horrors of peopleâs pipes bursting and roofs caving in flooding their homes.
Seeing people in Austin posting that, you decided to grab a tote to store your valuables in. Sadly, it wasnât a lot, but the idea of losing what little you had that meant something to you scared you.
You needed to go to your car to charge your phone and warm up some, so you decided to store your valuables in the trunk. Thankfully you had a covered parking space that was right in front of your apartment. When you put the tote in the trunk, you checked to make sure the tail pipe was clear of snow before you started the car.
After spending an hour in the car, you decided it was time for bed. Grabbing every piece of blankets you had, you cuddled up in Jaredâs hoody that you stole from him when you filmed episode 2 of Walker and all the blankets. You even had on two pairs of socks on since you got cold earlier.
The next morning, you checked to see your phone still had more than half its battery life left. But what shocked you was still no response from Jared. You got on Instagram and saw that Gen had posted a boomerang of him with his socks on as gloves, but neither had checked in with you.
You were kind of upset by this. You knew they didnât owe you anything, but it still hurt. Going to the kitchen, you saw it was flooded.
âOh no. Oh no. Nonononono.â You panicked. You ran to the bathroom and grabbed all the towels you owned and rushed back to the kitchen. You threw them down to try and absorbďżź as much water as possible. You opened the cabinet and saw the pipe that had burst. You grabbed your phone and called the landlord.
âHey Craig. I had a pipe burst this morning.â You said when he answered.
âCanât do much with the weather like this.â He said not really caring.
âCan you turn the water off or something? Or tell me where it is and Iâll do it.â You said getting angry.
âCanât do that either. If I do that, your neighbors lose their water too.â He said.
âWell what am I supposed to do. Just sit in water all day?â You asked with an annoyed tone.
âCityâs running out of water anyway so they may shut it off. So wonât be long before it stops.â He said. You got so mad that you hung up. He was useless.
After 3 hours, all of your towels were soaked and you started using some of your clothes to help absorb what the towels couldnât. You had tried calling Jared to see if he knew what to do but it went straight to voicemail. Same with Gen.
After using most of your clothes to stop the water, you decided to pack a bag in case you had to leave. Plus it would let you know what you could use to absorb the water that still remains. Thankfully your landlord had turned the water off after multiple people called about pipes bursting. All you had to do was finish cleaning up the mess.
Two days later, you were sitting in your car, about to go back into your apartment when you got a call from Gen.
âY/N. Oh my gosh itâs so good to hear from you. We havenât had service, plus we lost power and had a few pipes burst. Are you okay?â She asked worriedly.
âIâm okay. Sitting in my car right now so I could charge my phone and warm up a bit.â You told her.
âYou donât have power still?â She asked.
âNope. And I also had a pipe burst. But I cleaned it up and nothing was damaged. Did you have any damage done? Is everyone okay?â You asked concerned.
âYeah. We are fine. And just minimal floor damage.â She told you. âJared is cleaning that mess up while Iâm going to the store. Do you need anything? We have some of our neighbors over trying to stay warm and Iâm grabbing them stuff too. So I donât mind getting you anything.â
âIâm okay. I have plenty.â You said. You wanted heat. You wanted to sleep without having to wear five layers, but you refused to ask.
âWell if you do need something, text or call. Hopefully we get service back.â She said.
âI will. Thanks Gen.â you said as you hung up. Ten minutes later you got a call from Jared.
âPack a bag and bring some blankets.â He said before you could even greet him.
âWhat?â You asked genuinely confused.
âI said, pack a bag and bring some blankets. Also if you want to bring any food you donât want to go to waste or if you have water, bring that too. Iâll come in and help you carry.â He said.
âWh-wait.. what is happening?â You asked.
âIâm coming to get you and you are going to stay with us for a couple of days. I just got off the phone with Gen and she said you had a pipe burst and you donât have heat. So you are going to come stay with us until your power is back on and the pipe is fixed.â He said. âIâm pulling up. Iâll be inside in a second.â He hung up before you could say anything.
You went and unlocked the door before moving to your room. You grabbed your big suitcase and packed what few pair of pants you had, a weeks worth of underwear, two weeks worth of socks since you hated having cold feet, and the remaining three sweaters and seven shirts you had. It barely filled your suitcase so you decided to throw in a couple of hoodies as well.
âThat all your packing?â Jared asked concerned. No one knew how long this was going to last.
âItâs all I got clean.â You answered honestly.
âNo way.â He said in disbelief. You shrugged and told him to follow you as you walked into the kitchen. He saw the pile of clothes and towels on the ground. âOh Y/N. Iâm sorry this happened to you.â
âHappened to you too.â You said before moving back to your room. You grabbed a blanket and started to fold it, starting a pile you were taking with you to the Padaleckiâs. Once you finished that, you grabbed your pillow too.
âWant any books or anything? You have room in your suitcase.â Jared said as he pointed to it. You shrugged and grabbed a few books you had been wanting to read. After throwing them into the suitcase, you ran to the living room to grab your iPad and chargers.
âWe can charge them in the cars if we need to.â Jared said when you thought about not putting them in your bag. You nodded before throwing them in and zipping it up. âThis ready to go to the truck?â You nodded once again before he grabbed the suitcase handle and stack of blankets and your pillow with ease. âGo figure out food and Iâll come back to help.â
Once in the kitchen, you grabbed the full water case you had bought a few days before and the almost empty one that you had already opened. You then moved to the fridge to grab the few casserole dishes you had left to eat. You grabbed your travel food carrier and put the casseroles in first before the almost empty case of water in after it. You saw Jared walking back in and asked,
âIs there any food of mine you want? Iâve got everything packed that will definitely go bad before I get back. The rest has already gone bad.â You said while looking at Jared who was looking through your cabinets. He found your snack one and grabbed a few things and shoved them in your carrier.
âThatâs all I want.â He smirked. âReady to go? We can come back in a couple of days if we need to.â
âReady.â You walked to his truck and he helped you load the water and carrier. As you got into the passenger seat and started to buckle, you said, âthanks for coming to get me and letting me stay with you.â
âAnything for family.â He said smiling at you before driving carefully back to his house.
âBut we arenât family?â You said more as a question.
âYouâre my tv daughter, so technically we are.â He said with a laugh. âBut in all seriousness, I do see you as family. Me and you have gotten close over these past few months. I can see you as a daughter and I can see you as a little sister.â You could hear the sincerity in his voice.
âReally?â You asked. He nodded his head. âIt means a lot to hear you say that. I see you as a big brother.â
âGood.â You saw him smile. âThat means you can ask me for anything or do anything and Iâll be there for you. Sorry I didnât come get you sooner. I thought about it.â
âItâs okay. I tried calling but could never get through. It happens. Iâm just glad nothing more serious happened. Iâm glad we are all safe.â You said honestly.
âAnd we are about to get you warm. We have the fire going in the living room and in mine and Genâs room. Kids have been sleeping with us or on the floor in our room. Youâre welcome to make a pallet in front of the fire and crash there.â He said as he pulled into his driveway.
âSleeping in front of a warm fire sounds lovely right now. Thank you.â You leaned over and gave him a big hug. âI love you Jare.â You said before pulling back to kiss his cheek.
âLove you too y/n/n.â He smiled at you. âNow letâs go take all this in and get you warmed up.â
Currently thinking of Keegan Allen and he wrapped filming for Liam a few days ago but stuck around Austin to hang with the cast that had quickly become a second family. Thanks in no small part to a tall Texan with an easy smile and warm hug for everyone on set. And Keegan would be lying if he said he didnât lean into those hugs, soak in the feel of Jaredâs body pressed against his, breath in the sweet smell of his musk. Daydream about meeting him sixteen years earlier, when they maybe could have been something.
So when his phone chirps a notification that Jared just tweeted something, itâs automatic to pull it out and look. And he almost drops the phone when he sees the tweet.
It doesnât sound like Jared at all. Flat, empty, and for a man who has always worn his heart on his sleeve a bit alarming. In the short time Keeganâs known Jared, heâs found him to be a man of deep emotions. Quick to laughter, quick to anger, quick to forgive - but heâs never seen him empty. And if itâs a problem with Jensen...
To hear Jared tell it, Jensen hung the sun and the moon and makes the stars shine just for him. Even though hearing Jared speak about Jensen twists the jealousy tighter in Keeganâs gut, heâs been happy that Jared has someone like that. Someone who can give him the larger-than-life love he deserves.Â
His phone chirps again.
Normally Jared would be at home at this time, but Keegan knows he was filming late and he likes to unwind in his trailer before heading home to his family. âI need to shake off Walker and just be Jared,â heâd said once when they were hanging out, watching some dumb show and talking about nothing, Jared smiling at his phone whenever it buzzed with a message.Â
Keegan runs to the trailer now and normally he would knock but that last tweet has him opening the door as soon as he gets there, certain that Jared shouldnât be alone.
And Jared is alone, sitting on his couch in the dark, illuminated by the glow from his phone. He looks up when Keegan bursts in, eyes shining crystalline with tears, and Keegan doesnât say a word. Sits next to Jared and pulls the man into his arms, braces himself just in time as Jared buries his face in Keeganâs chest. Jaredâs shoulders shake as his tears spill out but he doesnât make a sound. All Keegan can do is hold him tighter, secure, and murmur soothing sounds into his hair until Jaredâs phone buzzes and he pulls away.
Frowns briefly at the texts and Keegan shamelessly reads over his shoulder as Jared stabs out a reply, sends it and turns his phone off.
âJared...â Keegan trails off, not sure what to say.
Jared looks up at him, 6â˛4âł of lost child. âI found out from Twitter. Fifteen years together, and I found out from Twitter.â His face crumples again. âItâs like... Itâs like everything we did together meant nothingââ
Keegan wraps Jared in a tight hug again and this time Jared clings to him, noisy sobs into his shoulder until heâs out of tears. He starts to pull away and Keegan keeps his arms tight, keeps his face buried in soft hair, and after a moment Jaredâs arms slide back around Keeganâs waist and he leans on him, accepts the comfort and affection Keeganâs offering.
Finally, Jared sighs. âIâm okay,â he whispers. âIâm okay now. Think Iâm gonna sleep here tonight.â He doesnât pull away. âYou can go... Itâs late, youâre tired, Iâm just gonna go to sleep...â
âI donât think you should be alone,â Keegan says and his voice comes out husky and raw. âI think I should sleep with you.â
Jared sits straight, pulls back enough to look at Keegan in the dark trailer, eyes wide. âKeegan... I canât... I just broke up-â
âJust sleep!â Keegan blurts out. âI just donât think you should be alone.â
Jared doesnât say anything, but his eyes lose the wide panicked look.
âPlease? Let me just hold you. So youâre not alone, I promise, thatâs all.â
And Jared whispers, âI think Iâd like that,â before standing, taking Keeganâs hand, and pulling him to the bed. They settle there, Keeganâs chest pressed against Jaredâs back and an arm draped over his surprisingly slender waist and maybe it should be awkward playing big spoon to such a tall man but Jaredâs always had a way of folding himself into something smaller.Â
Theyâre drifting to sleep when Jared sighs and murmurs, âThanks for staying.â
As long as youâll have me is what Keegan wants to say, but thatâs too much, especially now when Jaredâs hurting, so all he says is âAny time,â and sleep takes them both.
note: wow, the last 24 hours has been a ride... but Iâm glad that the IRL ending matched what I was hoping to be able to write!
part one
Sunlight filtering into the trailer and hitting his face woke Keegan, arms still wrapped around Jared. When he pulled away, Jared grabbed at his hand, pulling him back, and his heart sang for a moment.
Then Jared sleepily muttered âToo early, Jack, go back to sleep,â as he shoved his head under his pillow, and that told him all he needed to know.As much as he wanted, Keegan couldnât keep taking advantage of the situation. Last night was...
Well, it was excusable, because he was Jaredâs friend and Jared had clearly needed a friend. And as long as he pulls back now, he can play it platonic. At least until he sees if Jensenâs going to fix things with Jared, or until Jared is in a better place to start something new.Â
Keegan carefully extracts his arm from Jaredâs grasp and shakes his shoulder gently. âHey, big guy, wake up. At least enough to give me your breakfast order.â
Jared emerges from under the pillow, blinking sleep from his eyes. âKeegan. What...â
âDude, you were in a bad place last night. I stuck around for company. And Iâm starving and craft services is open, so Iâm gonna get breakfast. Thought Iâd grab some for you, too.â
â... âkay.â Jared looks around, looks everywhere but at Keegan. âWhereâs mâphone?â
âIâll get it.â
The phone is where Jared dropped it on the couch, still off, and Jared turns it on as soon as Keegan hands it to him. The screen shows dozens of messages, calls, emails, notifications, and Jared goes pale looking at the numbers.
âIâll just... Iâll get breakfast while you deal with... all that.â
Heâs barely out the door when his own phone chirps a notification at him, and he checks Jaredâs twitter.
Thereâs a line, and they give him a hard time as always for hanging around when heâs done filming (and he canât explain that heâs not ready to leave the Texas sunshine, even if itâs never going to shine for him) and a hard time for the sheer amount of food heâs ordering until he says âItâs for Jared.â
A chorus of âWas he here?âÂ
âIs he okay?â
âWhatâs happened?â
and from one crew member, with a suspicious look, âare you poaching?â
Keegan sighs, and sits down to answer what he can while the truck prepares âJaredâs usual.â
Finally, he escapes and makes his way back to Jaredâs trailer, balancing four boxes of food carefully. Hands too full to open the door, he kicks softly at the door. Jared answers with his phone at his ear, eyes guarded.Â
âJust a second, Jensen. Breakfast is here,â he says into the phone, then turns a bright, warm smile on Keegan. âHey, man, thanks for last night.â
âYeah, anytime.â Keegan smiles back, thinks he should get an Emmy for this performance of just-friends. He holds up the boxes. âYours are the top three.â
âDude. Thank you. Iâm starved!â Jared grabs the boxes. âYou wanna come in, or...?â
And Keegan can take a hint. âNah. You got stuff to talk about, I bet. Just... are you okay?â
And Jaredâs smile gets brighter. âI think weâre gonna be. Itâs the distance, you know? Never really had to deal with that before. So weâre working it out. Thanks again. You being here... you kept me from doing something stupid.â
âAnytime,â Keegan says again. âI should get out your hair. See you later.â
As he leaves, he catches a last bit of the conversation before the door closes: âSeriously, Jen, this canât happen again... I know youâre sorry...â and while his heart aches, heâs glad that Jaredâs not going to lose his joy.
