The crew hurried back and forth as they fulfilled their early shift jobs. Gunther had watched the senior crew discussing the matter of the loops in an impromptu meeting, until the Captain’s body language caught their attention. Even after he pulled them aside and they insisted they were calm, he found himself hard pressed to believe them.
“Doing something before doesn’t always lessen the fear of what’s to come. I’ve defused dozens of bombs in my lifetime, but it doesn’t mean I don’t feel that spike of agitation when I’m faced with another one.” He threw a quick glance over his shoulder at the rest of the group, who were mulling over photos that showed the wormhole’s location compared to both the main reactor and the cryobay. “Besides... This isn’t something anyone can be prepared for. And it’s okay to feel scared. It means you feel something about this. Being scared doesn’t mean that you’re going to run away from it. Instead, it’s the foundation for bravery - facing something despite how it makes you feel. It’s a good thing, Captain.”

Charlie looks a bit flustered at the unexpected arrival of the Captain themselves in the kitchens, hurriedly wiping off his hands on his apron. There’s powdered sugar smudged on his cheek but he still strikes a swift salute that they wave away.
“ Something I can do for you, Captain? Breakfast request, maybe? ”
They shake their head, and sign ‘I wanted to commend you for yesterday.’
Charlie blinks, surprised. “ Me? Pretty sure I didn’t do anything— ” he starts, but the Captain shakes their head again, lifting a hand to wave away his denial.
‘ I saw you delivering food again. That’s not your job. ’
“ Oh. Well, yeah, but… ” He scuffs his foot against the floor, looking sheepish. “ People gotta eat to take care of the ship. Not their fault they’re so busy, y’know? ”
‘ Doesn’t mean you aren’t going above and beyond. It’s a big ship. ’ They put a hand on his shoulder briefly, squeeze, and then it lifts away so they can continue to sign. ‘ You’re doing a great job. ’
Charlie sucks in a breath, and then slowly nods. “ …Thank you, Captain. ” There’s something a little damp to his eyes as he salutes again, before returning to his task with renewed vigor.
