There was the briefest hitch in Colin’s smile before he shored it back up to a dazzling yet dangerous grin that he knew would look good on camera. The Boss leaned into the microphone held up to his face.
“Oh no no, love, not at all. Just because the Saints haven’t been at open war with anyone lately doesn’t mean any of us have gone soft, myself included. If anything, there are even more people gunning for us, for me, than ever before.”
He lowered his voice to something even rougher and more husky, yet almost confiding. “I actually welcome it. Helps me keep my sharp edges honed and ready.”
He turned and continued down the red carpet before the reporter could ask anything else or even thank him. Deep down, Colin knew it was all an act; the Saints’ position had never been so secure and he hadn’t had to worry about anything more serious than nosy paparazzis and overly ambitious Ultor execs in almost a year. But the image of him as a hardened gang Boss had to be maintained, and if Colin knew anything, it’s that the best way to help sell your image was to first believe in it yourself. And really, the thought that anyone could come and try to topple their criminal and business empire seemed rather far-fetched...
