NETs Joan Stewart and Merilee Karr explained Disaster Sanitation at the People’s Farmers Market in East Multnomah County.
The People’s Farmers Market is a project of Multnomah Couinty REACH (Racial and Ethnic Approaches to Community Health) and Play Grow Learn to advance nutrition and self-determination in underserved racial and ethnic communities.Â
Community leaders were excited about our teaching and plan to have us back for more in-depth training.
Most people want to properly dispose of their waste, but they’re typically not prepared. Land managers can help users meet the moment.
Do not dig latrines in Portland, where these conditions are nearly impossible to meet: "Make sure you’re about 70 steps away from any water source, trail or campsite to avoid water contamination and reduce the likelihood that someone else will accidentally come upon your waste." Learn more about emergency sanitation from Merilee.

Question: What’s the risk of methane buildup in stored bags of poo? Could they explode?
Answer: In progress, but initial search indicates it takes about a month for human waste to produce methane. Aerobic composting of waste, that is, with air circulation, produces carbon dioxide more than methane. Anaerobic composting, which could occur in a closed plastic bag, produces more methane than carbon dioxide.Â
