Strength

“Adam! Come in, come in! I can see that you are upset, but I will explain everything.” Voulcan then pressed a button and an alarm went off. Adam could feel something trying to take over his mind but he fought it. He screamed and held his hands to his head.

“Oh! I see we have a fighter!” Voulcan walked over and looked Adam up and down. “I guess I’m going to have to break you myself”

Voulcan hit Adam outside the head. Adam fought the pain and the spell to hold up his fists. Voulcan shook his head and swung again. Adam grabbed his fist and threw him. Voulcan smashed into the wall.

“Oh? You want to fight back? I’ll fight back.” Voulcan picked up a pipe and started to beat Adam.

Adam couldn’t fight back. He tried to get a hold of the pipe but he kept loosing focus while trying to push the spell back. His hands felt disconnected from his brain. Eventually, he wasn’t able to keep up. The pain and the spell drug his consciousness under. The last thing he remembers is the fear. Knowing he’d be out of control, possibly hurting his friends. He tried to let out a scream but the darkness took him.

Next thing he knows, he feels like he’s blinking awake after sleeping for a long time. His body hurt. He felt like he could barely hold himself up. He might even have a concussion.

“Guys what happened?”

Suddenly Mira was hugging him. Adam wanted to push her off because he was IN PAIN but she was obviously torn up about what happened why he was out.

“Smashing the bottle must have broken the spell!”

Adam had no time to deal with what was going on in his body. They had to win the fight. Adam rolled his shoulder and got ready to face Voulcan again.

Later….

Adam rubbed his head as he walked with everyone to go fine their normal clothes. He really took a beating between the pipe and the snail. He wished he could convince everyone to rest for a bit in the castle so he could catch his breath. But at the same time, he just wants to go home and fall asleep cuddled with Puddles in his own bed.

“Hey, Adam. Are you ok? You seem kinda sluggish.” Mira rested a hand on Adam’s shoulder.

“Yeah, I made like 3 snail puns and you didn’t say anything about any of them,” Kai said.

“Don’t worry guys! I’m just tired. This has been a lot” Adam tried to wave off Mira and Kai, hoping they’d just let it be. He doesn’t feel like going over what happened with Voulcan. He just wants to change and head to their next terror.

“Bullshit Adam!” Mira’s outburst made Adam flinch. “Something happened! You’re off and I can’t figure out what it is and I just want to help you! So let me.”

Adam looked Mira in the eye. She had a strong look of worry, one that scared Adam because Mira doesn’t deserve that kind of stress. Adam’s eyes suddenly started to water. And he couldn’t stop the tears from spilling over. Adam starting sobbing, his knees giving out. Kai picked him off the ground and helped him into a bedroom. Kai sat him on the bed and Adam cried into Kai’s chest as Mira rubbed his back comfortingly.

“Adam, what happened?” Mira asked once Adam’s sobbed started to quiet.

“It doesn’t matter. We need to find the jazz club.” Adam started to get up but Kai pulled him back down.

“Of course it matters. You were just sobbing about what happened! You’re the strongest person I know. So whatever happened must have been hard and almost crippling. I can’t imagine holding onto that alone.” Kai looked between Adam and the floor.

“I-I lost.” Adam said, putting his head in his hands. “I tried to fight the spell but he started to fight me so my focus would break. I was able to hold on but then… he- he started beating me with a pipe and there was moment… a moment where I knew I wasn’t going to be in control and I wasn’t going to be able to protect you guys from myself. I wasn’t strong enough to fight back.”

Adam started to cry again. He curled into himself.

“I felt so scared. So alone. So fucking weak. I had Voulcan CORNERED. I could have ended it, right then and there. But he beat the living shit out of me. I failed you both. What’s the point of this super strength when I wasn’t strong enough to step up this old guy? When I wasn’t able to stay in control and protect you guys. I’m completely useless.”

Mira pulled his face to look her in the eyes.

“Adam, you did nothing wrong. We had no idea what was going on here and you had no idea what Voulcan had planned. You didn’t lose. We’re all still here. You came out on top in the end. The spell was so strong and you were so strong that you were able to fight while fighting Voulcan. I’m so proud of what you did.”

Kai placed his forehead on Adam’s shoulder blade. “I’m sorry I wasn’t there. You should never have had to go throw that alone. We’re a team. We need to protect each other and be there for each other.”

Adam leaned into Mira and put an arm around Kai. “Kai’s right. We’re a team. At the end of the day, we’re safe and that’s all that matters.” Adam said.

They stayed like that for a few minutes. Adam needed a moment to catch his breath before they move on. They all did.

“Ok, we need to move on.” Adam started to get up.

“Nope, cuddle puddle a little longer, then we can face monsters” Mira said. Neither Adam nor Kai argued with that. When they finally got up, they found their clothes and changed back. They met up at the top of the stairs.

“Ok, boys” Mira said before they descended. “Some new rules. 1. Don’t hide shit from each other. It’s not healthy, it doesn’t help anyone, and frankly I don’t want to have to yank it out you. 2. Don’t be afraid for each other. Yes we have to look out for each other but we’re all powerful. No one is carrying this team alone. Got it?”

“Got it,” Kai and Adam said together.

“Good! Not let’s figure out what the fuck is going on.”
