In Norse mythology, a vǫrðr, or warden, is a guardian spirit who will follow the soul of a living person from birth until death. Usually invisible, a vǫrðr will sometimes reveal themself to their charge as a small, floating light or the glowing outline of a person.
A related belief is that of the vårdträd, or warden tree, a very old linden, ash or elm tree said to house spirits and protect the land on which it sits.
