On top of that I locked myself out of my house and had to climb up my balcony railing and scraped my knee and leg up reeaaaall good and had to get a tetanus booster. Another day to thank whoever is up there that I live in Canada

Now onto a far more relaxed day of reading. I’m eating these books up for breakfast lunch and dinner, I should finish the series rather quick which is good considering it took me like three years (I’m not even joking, maybe longer) to actually finish the first volume

And incase you’re wondering, I do, in fact, put the cool in school

Spoilers below the cut since this picks up after season 1.

At the conclusion of Volume 5, we see Emma receive her vision of the footsteps on the stairs (you know, the ones that are the other half of home).

Afterwards, she heads back to Lapis Lazuli and crosses paths with Pierce, who is just heading out. They exchange a few words then part ways. Once upstairs, Emma readies for bed and journals. She sits in her window seat, musing over A Midsummer Night's Dream and thinking about the new year. She ends the volume:

Almost midnight now, my face pressed against the cool glass. I can almost hear them. Footsteps on the stairs.

At first read, we think she is calling to mind her image of the future from earlier in the day.

But look again. She doesn't say “the” footsteps on the stairs, which would designate a reference to something in particular, or unique. By leaving off a simple article, she extends beyond a reference to the particular footsteps of her vision and into the possibility of describing an ordinary sound at present.

Furthermore, we know there is someone who has been out of the house tonight, who would likely be returning late: Pierce. She says she can “almost” hear footsteps – as if, perhaps, the sound may be muffled through several tangible walls?
