The lowest of the ranks, these Vampires aren't actually part of the Volturi yet, but rather training to join. Someone needs to have been a Vampire for at least 5 years before they are eligible to train as a Cadet. They train almost nonstop for a year with numerous tests thrown their way.
These tests include fighting tests, control around blood tests, taking orders and obedience tests, and tests on how they cope/react with stressful situations. The Cadets remain in the castle for this entire year and they all, usually a group of about 30, share one singular dorm during this year where they hang out/get ready.
These Cadets bear a white cloak and no Volturi pendant. No gift is required for this rank.
These Guards share in rooms of about 3 to 5 and have their own common room where they can hang out. Their main duties are cleaning the Castle and helping to dispose of bodies after feedings, and sometimes they may accompany higher ranked guards when punishing a Coven to bulk up the numbers to make it seem more intimidating.
The Guards in this rank spend a lot of their time sparring and training in fighting, as well learning different key languages and Vampire history. However most of them will never see a proper fight or battle, as they are more show Guards than anything else.
These Guards bear a cadet gray cloak, and their Volturi pendants are crafted out of cheap metal and plastic stones. As a result these pendants break easily so a lot of them are made. Guards in this rank must serve for at least 50 years before they apply for promotion and even then most Guards spend 100 years as a Transitional before they are promoted. No gift is required for this rank.
Lower-Inferiore
This is where the vast majority of Guards are placed. The emphasis on cleaning and chores is less pronounced in this rank as they are often sent to deal with minor troublemakers themselves. They continue their fighting training, but the focus on learning new languages is less pronounced as their duties are now more time consuming, and they should have learnt most of the basic required languages whilst in transitional.
These Guards share dorms in about groups of 3, though they aren't required to live in the Castle and can instead apply to live elsewhere so long as they remain within 1000 miles of Volterra. They also have their own common room.
These Guards bear battleship Gray cloaks and their Volturi pendants are crafted out of better quality metal with glass stones. Guards who have reached this rank can no longer get promoted. No gift is required for this rank.
Common-Comune
This rank is almost exactly the same as the Lower Guards, except the Vampires in this rank have gifts. These Vampires due to their gift go straight from Transitional to Common, unless their gift is especially crappy and then they remain in Transitional.
Their duties are almost exactly the same as that of Lower Guards, except their training includes training with their gifts. And they are often sent on more missions. These Guards share rooms in groups of 2 and have their own Common room.
They bear a carbon gray cloak, and their Volturi pendants are crafted from decent quality metal and cheap gems. They have a chance to be promoted to the Elite Guard but it is rare. A gift is required.
Elite-Elite
This is near the top end of the Guard structure, and things such as cleaning the Castle and disposing of bodies don't exist for these Guards. These Guards all get their own rooms with an en-suite bathroom (E.g. Shower, sink, bath, vanity), and only responsible for keeping their own rooms clean. The common room for these Guards is shared with the Royal Guards and is incredibly well furnished with a variety of enrichment items like X-boxes, a mini library, pool table, Tv's and other such things.
These Guards receive much more leisure time as their only responsibility is attending missions and training their gift or fighting skills every so often unless they are being punished.
Their cloak is arsenic gray, and their Volturi pendants are crafted out of real gold or silver (depending on the Guard's preference), and inlaid with expensive gems. These Guards are allowed to make adjustments to their pendants such as having something engraved on the back. A gift is required for this rank (The only exception is Felix.)
Royal-Reale
These are the very, very top end of the Guard's that very few are actually in. They receive their own private rooms with an en-suite bathroom and walk in closet. They have the most leisure time out of all the Guard's due to only having to attend the very important missions.
These Guards are also allowed to leave the Castle/Volterra whenever they want, unless they are under punishment, whilst all lower guards have to receive permission from a King or a Royal Guard to leave, apart from Cadets who can't leave at all. The only stipulation is if a Royal Guard leaves they must remain contactable through a phone, and they must send a message to Aro saying they are leaving, so they can't be accused of desertion.
These Guards receive charcoal cloaks and their Volturi pendants are crafted out of real gold or silver, again depending on preference, and inlaid with expensive, quality gems. They are allowed to have engravings on the back. These Guards are always gifted, and the gifts are always powerful.

17/ ∞ No place like home - Volterra: The town that The Volturi call home was founded by them in 978 BC, then known as ‘Velathri’. Becoming their base of operations and the centre of vampiric culture. It is also heralded as the safest place to live in the world, much of it is attributed to the strict laws around hunting as well as the fact that The Volturi owns all of the town and the surrounding areas to this day.
Alec- A Royal Guard easily. He's widely acknowledged as one of the most powerful Vampires in the Twilight saga, and he's capable of incapacitating multiple Vampires at once. So it'd be an insult to place him in a lower rank.
Afton- Transitional Guard. His gift is crappy, and I subscribe to the headcanon that the rest of the Volturi, bar Chelsea, also don't like him. There's no way in hell Aro is promoting him, and Aro fantasies about kicking him out of the Volturi. Alas Chelsea loves him.
Corin- Corin is one of the Guard's who I don't really think has a defined rank? She doesn't really fit in any of the boxes, she doesn't attend missions or clean up the Castle. Her role is to keep the Wives content, and thus I don't think she leaves the Tower often. At least not often enough to justify giving her an official rank. That being said I think she has the cloak and pendant of an Elite Guard due to her role with the Wives, though people acknowledge her more as a floater Guard. Very important but with no defined rank.
Chelsea- A Royal Guard. Listen she holds the entire Volturi together. There's no way she's anything but the highest rank of Guard, because a)She actually is that important, and b)Because Aro wants to keep her loyal and happy. While all the Royal Guards are technically equal, I'd put her as the unofficial leader of the group and thus all the other Guards.
Demetri- I was on the fence between Elite and Common Guard for him, but i ultimately went for Elite. His gift is tracking, yes, which is a very common gift in Vampires, but his tracking gift is incredibly powerful, so much so that he can find someone anywhere on the world, whilst other trackers are limited to singular areas or only being able to track those close to him. I think it is the fact that his gift is so powerful that bumps him up to the Elite rank in my mind.
Felix- Per the rules of my own headcanons about the Volturi rank structure, Felix should technically be in the Lower Guard due to his lack of gift. However I'm going to place him in Elite Guard (partially because I'm biased because I like Felix), but also because it's to have someone the non-gifted Guards can aspire to be. It's important that they feel like there's a chance of progressing further than the Lower Guard. Especially because I believe that once you reach the Lower Guard you aren't leaving the Volturi alive, they have a 100 years in Transitional to decide if the Volturi is what they want and if it isn't they can leave after a handshake from Aro, but once you reach Lower and higher you are in it for the rest of your immortal life. As I result I think Felix is sort of the head of Guard for all the non-gifted Guards and someone who can aspire to be and take his place if he ever got killed.
Heidi- Heidi in my eyes is another floater Guard. She, like Corin, doesn't fit into the requirments of any particular rank because her job is a very specialised one, one only she does, and arguably only she can do it with the large amounts of people she has to make go missing without a trace about twice a month. However, like Corin I'd give her the cloak and pendant of an Elite Guard just because her job is actually that important and useful to the Coven, and it would be a lot more difficult to send all of the Guard's out to hunt for themselves. Though I do think she only hunts for the Kings, Queens, the Royal and Elite, and Cadet Guards, and perhaps particular members of the Common Guard. Everyone else has to travel out of Volterra to hunt for themselves.
Jane- Like her brother a Royal Guard. She and Alec were instrumental to gaining the Volturi's power, and are instrumental in keeping it. Her rank will reflect this. Plus I just love the mental image of these two tiny 12 year olds being higher ranked than practically every other member of the Volturi, who the vast majority were turned as adults, though I do think a few were also turned under the age of 18.
Renata- I'd put her as a Royal Guard due to the fact that she's only the Guard who gets to be a personal bodyguard to any of the Kings, and because I think Aro would want his personal bodyguard to be the highest rank possible to reflect the importance of her. Plus I just think Renata's gift is actually very cool as in theory it makes her and whoever she protects virtually unable to be killed though in practise this may be not be the case, due to Vampires like Bella and the fact that somehow her gift tanks the gifts of practically every other Vampire. (Renata is one of the few Vampires in the Volturi I think are physically under the age of 18. I think Renata was turned at the age of 17, despite Meyer saying 20, as it makes Uncle Luca even creepier and Aro plucking her out of her old life and putting her in the Volturi that much more powerful, and makes her intense loyalty towards Aro more realistic even if we can just handwave it away as Chelsea's doing. Just let me have this headcanon. Plus mental image of her being Aro's bodyguard, again amusing, she's 5ft, about 17 and very unassuming but she's a Royal Guard and bodyguard to one of the leaders of the entire Vampire world.)
Santiago- There's not really much about Santiago anywhere? Other than the fact that he isn't gifted?? So per my own headcanon rules he has to be placed in the Lower Guard, though I do think he'd be the one to take Felix's place in the Elite Guard if anything ever happened to Felix.
16/ ∞ No place like home - Aro’s Vault: Deep beneath Volterra within the caverns you will find a door under lock and key. The only one in the palazzo who has access to the grand vault is Aro; who has collected memorabilia for millennia. Some of the artefacts hidden there are of immense value, while others hold sentimental significance. It is said that the last Didyme’s belongings are stored there for eternity.
“The course of true love never did run smooth”
― A Midsummer Night’s Dream, William Shakespeare
Requested by @itskelaufeyson : “Hello, it’s me again. Sorry I just can’t get enough of your work. Can I please request an imagine. Where Aro or Caius, which over one you would prefer, being all jealous and possessive? Like imagine at like a classic ball and someone tries to hit or their S/O? I’m sorry if this is super specific but again, thank you so much for writing these Hc/imagines.”
On this blog we love highly specific requests, especially if they involve a fancy ball. And never feel the need to apologise when you return to my inbox! I love it when familiar faces show up. Feels like I’m building a tiny community. Since Aro got all the attention in the last request, I decided to let Caius have his time in the spotlight. To be fair he always has it on my blog, but I digress. Also I literally took this and ran with it. This is in fact the longest thing I have written to date.
Summary: It is that magical time in June. Midsummer is upon the world and the Volturi has invited their friends and allies for an evening of decadence. Caius spends the evening much like he had the last hundred years, indulging in all that his coven has to offer and looking down upon his subjects. Only this year, his newfound mate is making their own rounds among the guests. Everything was going well, until a fool decided to touch what doesn’t belong to him.
Wordcount: 2839 words
!Warnings! None this time, except Caius being his territorial and terrifying self.
The 6 feet tall stained glass doors had been flung open, the dying sun reflecting through the vivid artwork made the entire hall be bathed in an ethereal glow. Luscious scents of pomegranate flowers and cypress was upon the the breeze, a soft fragrant bouquet that did not even disturb the heightened senses of the ballrooms occupants. Full skirts and well tailored garments in a myriad of colours had been chosen to celebrate the height of summer. The all too perfect faces greeted one another in familiarity, sharp smiles with equally sharp teeth. All too familiar was the hum of voices through out the room. Never having the need to shout the loudest to get someones attention. In the corner, a small orchestra was playing soft waltzes with precision and grace only vampires could perform. Everything was as it always was when it came to such occasions, refined and controlled.
Well, not all was the same.
One of the three was observing the room with a hawkish demeanour. Taking note of every single persons movement and conversation, lesser vampires would feel intimidated under that gaze. He stood out against the marble, a haughty blood red stain against the pristine nature of the palace. There was never an occasion when he was not cloaked in crimson and adorned in silver and chrome. Draped across his shoulders was a fine grey pelt, skinned from a werewolf he had hunted a year ago. Absentmindedly he flexed his right hand, feeling the leather around it stretch satisfyingly. He had never been one for opulent jewels, that was his brothers fancy. But tonight he had chosen to wear an ornate ring cast in silver, with a pigeon blood ruby in the centre. It also happened to match the jewellery his mate was wearing tonight.
A crystal glass was brought to his lips, savouring the feeling of thick ambrosia on his tongue with a deep hum. They had truly been able to procure some fine blood for the evening. The only thing missing was his mate snug against him on one of the ornate sofas they had set up in the privacy of their balcony.
But alas, this was their first ball. Technically it was also the first official event they had been presented as his mate. Wanting to make a good impression, they had voiced their interest in interacting with the guests. Caius was quite lost in his own thoughts when Aro’s enthused voice cut through to him
“Brother dearest, won’t you come join us?” his attentions shifted, turning to look at the rest of his coven.
Marcus looked as he usually did, quite disinterested with the world and its affairs as he lounged in a large wingback chair. A book was resting on his lap, its purpose to keep him company as the ball dragged on into the late evening. His elder brother would only attend their little parties at Aro’s behest.
Jane and Alec had also joined them, as they often did. Most would think them to be guarding the core coven, but there were sentimental reasons there as well. For Aro would bestow much attention to the both of them whenever he could. Jane sat prim and proper upon a divan as she softly conversed with her brother who was standing.
His younger brother and his darling wife however laid sprawled across a sofa, looking quite cozy together.
“Your sweet mate is doing a marvellous job down there.” a cheshire smile stretched on Aro’s lips. “Why when I and Sulpicia were dancing all we could hear was murmured praise.” The comment made Caius scoff.
He left the two faced politics to Aro, ... and now perhaps also his mate. He frowned at the thought, electing to ignore his brothers urgings and turned back to observe his mate just as Sulpicia spoke up, gently swatting at her husbands shoulder. “Oh, let him look out for them. They are still considered newly bonded mates after all.” Aro’s simple response was a dramatic sigh and a shrug of his shoulders. Rolling her eyes his queen stood up to join Caius at the railing, the two of them watching as his mate moved around the ballroom. They were doing well, greeting and conversing with the covens they had been instructed to socialize with.
Caius could feel pride swell in his chest, raising his glass in a small and unnoticeable toast for his mate. He was mid sip when the scene before him made him freeze up. The glass leaving a light coat of blood on his lips, staining them. Besides him Sulpicia also seemed to perk up, interest evident. The vampire in question was young, for Caius could not remember his face. A new addition to an already existing coven then. Unbeknownst to the blathering fool, he had now signed his very own death sentence with the venom that flowed in his veins. For he was quite openly propositioning Caius’ mate, and he did not have pure intent. Having moved way past a vampires comfort zone and speaking directly into their ear. It could almost be perceived as intimate, if only his mate did not bear an expression of disgust.
“Κοπριάς” His choice words had Sulpicia in a chortle, her laughter clear as bells. Whilst his sister in law was attempting to compose herself, Caius was already making plans for how he would dismember the man in the most painful way possible. A predatory smile stretched on to his bloodied lips. You always needed a pyre during midsummer, and he would gladly provide it. With a swipe of his tongue the last remains of blood was gone from his mouth. There had been an itch inside of him for a while now, and this vampire’s idiocy might just give him release.
Whilst Caius schemed, Sulpicia returned her attention back to her brother in laws mate. One perfectly shaped eyebrow rose as the vampire in question made himself even more comfortable in her new family members presence. “His hand is upon their waist, brother dearest.” she took another sip of her own blood, letting out a curious hum as she finished the glass. “How Scandalous”
“I am fully aware Sulpicia, I have yet to turn blind.” Caius deadpanned, jaw clenched as his attention zeroed in on his mate. They were attempting to step away, making a peace offering motion with their hands. The other vampire did not take the hint, following and stepping closer once more. The ill fated suitors gaze was depraved, raking over their body as if it was his property. The glass in Caius’ hand burst from the sheer force of his grip. Blood splattering on to the marble railings and slowly trickling down the column below. The sound of shattering glass drew the attention of his brothers, Aro fixing him with a look of annoyance as he gently tutted.
It was unacceptable, coming into their home and blatantly disrespecting a king’s mate. Sulpicia leaned into Caius, a mockery of a whisper left her “I will smooth my husband over, but Caius... Non pulmentum de contignationibus faciunt. Quaeso?” she said with a pointed look before making her way back to Aro. Running her hands over his shoulders before taking a seat at his side. Whispering into his ears about having seen a certain golden eyed vampire in the masses.
“Nulla promissa-” Caius called after her with a smile.
Jane and Alec were now both alert, the former having stood up from her seat on the divan. Ready to join him if he gave the order, eyes shining with utter devotion. He dismissed her with a gentle motion of his hand, causing her to sit down again. The twin’s loyalty was something he valued immensely, but this was something he needed to take care of personally.
In a flurry of crimson and grey he made his is way down the gently curved stairs to the side of the balcony. Felix and Santiago was flanking him the moment his shoes hit the checkered marble floor. The two guards familiar with following him into various situations. And at the moment, he was on the prowl.
----
At the other end of the ballroom, Caius’ mate was growing both impatient and irate. They had greeted this guest as they had all the others, but this one decided to linger. Lavishing them with much unneeded attention. They were fully aware, that if they called for a guard this problem would solve itself.
Earlier they had for a brief second caught Demetri’s attention, who had been dancing with Heidi. They had gently dismissed them both, wanting to take care of this themselves. A feeling of regret was sneaking its way into their heart now. When the vampire attempted two wrap their arm around them for the second time they snapped, stepping away with a snarl. “Do not presume to touch me in such a manner” He looked as if he was preparing another sickly sweet flirtation, but caught the sight of something that made him freeze.
Caius looked absolutely menacing as he practically glided through the masses, his destination unquestionable. Felix and Santiago, two hulking figures clad in dark grey that followed him without question. His mate felt relief flood through them, they had had enough of this vampire. And there was no one better to get rid of him than their very own mate. There was no pity.
For a split second the two mate’s eyes met, and Caius’ expression softened ever so slightly. Those eyes were only reserved for them, and it made something tighten in their chest. It was a beautiful juxtaposition, the extravagance of the ball itself; and the way a mere look from Caius was enough to render them to feel so bare and plain. Instinctively did they move to his side when he was close enough, an arm was placed protectively around their shoulders as the king brought them near. With a gloved hand he gentle tilted their chin up so they would look directly at him. “Are you alright?” With a nod of their head they lifted up a hand to pat his gently. They were now. Meanwhile Felix and Santiago had circled around the stunned vampire. Whom finally seemed to wake up from their stupor when they were right behind him.
Panic had settled in, and in desperation did he attempt one final move. “My apologies-” He began as his arm stretched out, as if to reach out and hold the hand of his mate. There was no force in the world that could hold the king back.
Caius had him by the neck in less than a second, feet ever so slightly sagging against the floor. The vampires frantic eyes met Caius’ which had turned pitch black in anger. How dare he attempt to touch his mate? Slowly, cracks began to form on the vampires neck. For a split second he considered tearing the other mans head off in the middle of the ballroom, decorum be damned. No, he would not let a no name vampire embarrass him like that; and there could always more fun to be had later. The vampire was unceremoniously dropped, the king looking down a him as if he was nothing more then a speck of dirt on his shoes. Other guests had stepped back, not wishing to get in the kings way. Or worse, implicate some kind of kinship with the vampire that was grasping at his throat.
No words were spoken, Caius’ unnerving presence was enough to convey his utter disgust for the vampire in front of him. A brief look towards Felix and Santiago was the only order they needed to pick up the pathetic excuse of a vampire that was sprawled on the floor. Being hoisted up between the two guards seemed to have roused the vampire from his shock, for he began to struggle. Caius instinctively wrapped an arm around his mate’s waist, grip firm.
An eerie calm befell the ballroom, every pair of crimson or golden eyes turned to watch the vampire be escorted out. No one would come to his aide or plead his case, not even his own coven. There was no room for mercy, it was evident on Caius’ face. An amused glint in his eyes as he watched the offender being dragged into the hallway. He would get to play later. The ballrooms main doors were closed with a resonating crack.
Everyone gathered were still, if a human had seen such a sight they would have thought them statues. Reaching down Caius brought his significant others hand to his lips, softly kissing their knuckles and keeping eyecontact. With a snap of his fingers did the musicians start up again, playing an equally energetic tune as they had before the interruption. Taking a step back he dipped into a polite bow, offering his hand.
His mate could do nothing but shake their head at his antics, but still offered him a soft smile. “Perhaps he did not know?” they offered, as they placed their hand in his; letting Caius lead them on to the dance floor. As an answer they received a humorless laugh, they really were trying to be diplomatic. “Our scents are intermingled, every vampire in this room should know.” He led them into a waltz, moving them with expert precision through the throng of people. It was as if the last 15 minutes had never happened. The balls attendees seemingly forgetting about the vampire that was being dragged into the deepest and darkest place in the palace. “I will not stand by as someone all but implies I cannot keep my mate satisfied,”
“Oh come now love, it's midsummer and we should be having a good time.” A mischievous glint in their eyes made Caius tilt his head. Leaning up they let their mouth graze against the shell of his ear as they whispered. “Perhaps I should lay flowers under my pillow-” before they were able to finish the sentence, they found themselves whisked across the dance floor at an alarming speed. Spinning them in an elaborate circle before pulling them to him once more, gloved fingers digging into their waist.
“You know very well who your husband shall be” Caius purred darkly into their ear, sending a jolt of excitement through them. His arm around their waist tightening as he lifted them in unison with the other dancers, reverence shone in his deep vermillion eyes before bringing them down into his embrace once more. He brought them closer as he spun them, supporting their spine as they leaned back. There was another disorientating spin before everything became silent once more. The dance ending as their back was pressed firmly against his chest, Caius arms wrapped around them in a gentle embrace. “Regardless, you are my spouse in all the ways that matter” He held their now cold heart in the palm of his hand, their flesh was marked by his teeth, even the blood that had rushed in their veins had been his to feast upon. And if there was still a soul left inside of him, it was theirs.
“Caius...” his name escaped his mate’s lips, begging and needy.
----
Decadent hallways blurred into one another as Caius led them at a brisk pace. He had wasted no time with escorting his mate from the ball. They needed him, and he would provide. When they were a secure distance away from prying eyes, he hoisted his mate up on a deep windowsill. Pressing himself against their side.
Caius surged forward, capturing his mate’s lips in a kiss that was all teeth and tongue. A low growl reverberated from his chest as they reciprocated with the same fervour. It was everything they wanted, needed and craved - and yet it never seemed to be enough. For the love he provided was honey, wine and blood, they ached for him. The two of them would embrace and feel like fire consumed them, time and time again. Limbs tangled as the two lovers let themselves get lost in their love, bathed in the rays of the dying sun; making what was visible of their skin glimmer and glow as only theirs did.
When he did pull away, he gasped for air he did not actually need. Looking up at his mate, who was bathed in gold, creating halo around their head. This was the only sight that could make the king fall to his knees in blatant worship. Sweet words dripped from his lips. Something archaic and unintelligible, lost in the millennia's since it was last spoken. Their sentiments were not lost on his mate however. Reaching out they tangled their fingers into Caius’ pale hair and pulled him closer to them.
Closing his eyes, he leaned his forehead up against theirs. Noses gently bumping together as lips hovered over marble skin. His hands reached up to cradle their face, hastily pulling off his gloves before doing so.
“You are mine, as I am yours.”
𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬:
Κοπριάς: Apparently, in Ancient Greek this translates to “Dirty Bafoon”, a befitting Caius insult.
Non pulmentum de contignationibus faciunt. Quaeso?: Don't make a mess of the floors. Please?
Nulla promissa: No promises
Authors note: I am highly considering drawing Caius with the outfit I described. The image is so clear in my head and I miss doing art. Also the bit about “putting flowers under their pillow” is an old tradition from my country. If you do so at midsummer you are supposed to dream about your future husband. This was a lot of fun to write, I cannot wait to see what the feedback for this is going to be like. As always, thank you for your continued support. 🖤

14/ ∞ No place like home - The Entrance Hall: When one enters Volterra you are keenly aware of what awaits. There are two statues facing opposite one another with a staircase parting them ominously. This is not the entrance humans get to see, but the ones vampires will have to pass when they have been called upon or brought in. The two statues are Justitia: personification of the moral force in judicial systems, and Prudentia: personification of the ability to govern and discipline by the use of reason. An eternal reminder of what is at stake to vampires who face The Volturi's law.
11/ ∞ No place like home - The Guard's Recreation Room: Serving The Volturi is a difficult and often thankless job, none of the guard complain however for they have found purpose in their immortality. However, Aro thought it important that they have a place in the palace where they could simply relax without the need for decorum.
15/ ∞ No place like home - Marcus' Quarters: The eldest king occupies the 6th floor of the western wing with his private quarters. His rooms include his private salons and personal artefacts he would rather not anyone else behold. On a good day you will be able to hear beautiful piano music come from his quarters, nobody else is allowed in the room while he plays though.
