Media literacy is not dead. Media literacy is a skill and skills need to be practiced skills don’t die. Literacy and comprehension are not hopeless causes and uses words like “media literacy is dead” “gen z/gen alpha is illiterate” are counter productive and encouraging hopeless and not trying. Even if you don’t work with kids you can help foster Cristal thinking and reading skills in the next generation by leading by example. Donating to local schools or libraries. Volunteering at schools and libraries if that option is available is important. Libraries are one of the very few free third spaces still available. Libraries have so so so many events/programs that encourage kids, teens and adults to read, craft, engage socially. Libraries and Schools need your help use your money, voice, time, VOTE to help literacy rates. With the rise of AI and social media being so accessible this issue is very important. Do whatever you can do to actually help literacy rates, reading comprehension and critical thinking. Talk critically and openly about the media you consume this will encourage others to think about media they might see as just funny or just background noise easy to digest. When scrolling through social media take a break to think about what’s on your feed.
