I'm curious - in Rumi and Nero's herd did the adults ever have to leave their herdmates behind, because of The Don't Look Back And Run Rule? (If it's something you can tell, ofc!)
You'll just have to wonder! But there's a fan theory of Volhos having done the same as Nero sometime in his youth, mostly because of the matching scar.
But it's pretty safe to assume that the rule has been heeded, it's a very crucial one for marshlanders.
On Volhos not being a bad dad... I agree. The only reason he seems to be a bad dad from our perspective is because we are human, and humans are not (typically) constantly in danger from being hunted for food by other animals. Additionally, while we are capable of foraging, for the most part that is no longer the primary method of obtaining food for us.... They, however, are deer, and so much more at risk of being preyed upon or starving to death due to food shortages....
It's only natural for us to root for those we can relate to more, like the siblings more humane way of thinking, but I still want to remind people that the creatures in GS are animals. It would've been devastating for the herd to hear that yes, the leader they rely their lives on would break his own rules for his own kin but not for others. He has to be fair and objective, Runi put him in a spot. Even if the readers tend to hate him, I'm sure Virva understands. I'm sure Volhos had a long talk with her afterwards. He loves her dearly, and while he might say these things, who knows if he'd be actually able to leave her when she's actually in danger.
Marshlanders don't get into prolonged conflicts with predators, that's their way. Majority needs to upkeep the norm so the ones thinking differently might shine.

No, I just like the name.
Kasko's name comes from the word 'kaski' which means burn-clearing. And I guess the insurance company of the same name spoke to me too.
Boneslav was inspired by bonesaw and coleslaw.
Antaras' was inspired by Antarctica and the star Antares.
Karuna's name came from Corona, which means 'crown'.
Virva and Vanja were both born from the word 'varpu', which means twig/shrub.
Volhos from 'louhos' which means quarry.
