Brother’s Ruin by Emma Newman

Set in Victorian London, this is the first in a series of novellas where magic is real and controlled strictly by a Royal Society of Magic. Charlotte is the daughter of an illustrator, takes care of her often sick brother and is due to be married to a nice young man. But she is also secretly a successful illustrator in her own right and she has magical abilities, both of which she must keep secret in order to be able to live the life she desires. However, when it becomes apparent that her father is in financial trouble some matters are taken out of her hands. 

This story quickly hooks you in with the setting and characters and was a really page turner right to the end. I found all the characters very animated and engaging, bough to life by wonderful descriptions. And the plot itself kept twisting and turning just when I thought I knew what was going to happen next.
