#Jellyfish (La Méduse) [Brooch], 1967
Moonstones, diamonds, sapphires, 18k gold, platinum
Collection of Rachel Lambert Mellon @ Virginia Museum of Fine Arts.
One of the more interesting things I saw at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts today was this Faberge frame made of silver-gilt, enamel, glass and ivory that had photographs of Tsar Nicholas II and his Children!
It seems that all the photos used were taken from the 1913 formal session but an interesting photo caught my eye. The lower left features a picture of Anastasia Nikolaevna from the 1913 formals as we can barely make out a bit of Alexei too but the interesting thing is if you look at her, you notice her photo has been edited to have her hair appear to be worn up!
At the time that photo was taken, Both Maria and Anastasia didn’t wear their hair up so it puzzles me as to why it ended up being edited this way but my guesses are that 1.) this was given to someone after Maria started wearing her hair up in 1914 and presumably the editor, not having any official photos, mixed up her with Anastasia or 2.) whoever edited the photo didn’t know or couldn’t see that Anastasia had long hair due to the background and hair color therefore made it try to match the styles of Olga and Tatiana which resulted in this happening!
Overall it’s still a neat little detail I noticed and honestly think it’s kinda cool!
Obligatory VMFA photo dump

Tennis at Newport
Artist: George Bellows (American, 1882–1925)
Date: 1919
Medium: Oil on canvas
Collection: Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, Richmond, Virginia, United States
In the summer of 1919, George Bellows attended an invitational tennis tournament at Rhode Island’s prestigious Newport Lawn Tennis Club. Evidently captivated by its luxurious setting and finely attired people, he produced four large paintings of the subject over the course of the next year. This version is the most complete and captivating of the series. Exquisitely composed, it reveals the artist’s concern with light as a means of directing the viewer’s gaze. Light radiates not from the interior background of the image, as in his other paintings of Newport, but rather from outside the canvas. Casting shadows away from the viewer, the technique effectively highlights the focus of his image, the elegantly dressed spectators in the foreground.
